This castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
During the Battle of Sekigahara, depicted in TV dramas and novels, it was the setting for the famous scene in which Tokugawa Ieyasu's vassal Torii Mototada and others defended it and met a tragic end.
While it evokes nostalgia as "Fushimi Momoyama Castle Castleland" for Kansai residents born in the Showa era, it is now a public recreation park with only a replica castle tower remaining.
Back then, you could climb the tower, but it's now off-limits.
While the castle itself has no historical value, it's a replica tower. However, in spring, the castle and cherry blossoms—a sight everyone loves and quintessentially Japanese—are a sight everyone enjoys. Many foreign tourists, including myself, enjoyed, too.
It's not too crowded during the day on weekdays, so it's a great place for cherry blossom viewing.
It's about a 15-minute walk from JR Momoyama Station.
