Jinshanling is one of the most breathtaking and best-preserved sections of the Great Wall of China. Known for its rugged beauty and dense concentration of watchtowers, it offers both scenic views and a deep dive into history. This guide helps you plan your half-day or full-day visit.
🗺 Routes & Trail Options
Jinshanling is divided into East Route and West Route.
• East Route: Considered the highlight, with denser towers and dramatic climbs.
• West Route: Gentler terrain but still has excellent viewpoints.
Walking Options (from the ticket gate):
1. Zhuandoukou (砖垛口) – 800m gentle paved road, <10 min. The easiest option.
2. Houchuankou (后川口) – near the cable car station, ~20 min hike, moderate.
3. Taocun (桃春口) – leads to the West Route, slightly tougher.
4. East Five-Eye Tower (东五眼楼) – leads to the East Route exit (closes 5 pm).
🚡 Cable Car: ¥40 per person. Runs to Xiaojinshan Tower (小金山楼) on the East Route.
👉 Not necessary if you enjoy hiking, since walking is manageable.

🏯 Highlights & Watchtowers
• 密集敌楼 (Dense Towers): On the East Route, towers appear every ~40–50m, perfect for exploring.
• Flower Tower (花楼): Offers dramatic 90-degree photo angles, but climb is steep.
• Qilin Tower (麒麟楼): Famous for the “Qilin Shadow Wall.” Drone photography is allowed here.
• Xiaojinshan Tower (小金山楼): End point for the East Route; restored area. Beyond this lies original, untouched Great Wall sections.
⸻
💡 Practical Tips
• Difficulty: West Route = gentler; East Route = steeper and more challenging.
• Footwear: Wear anti-slip hiking shoes — some parts are steep and rocky.
• Best For Photos: Sunrise/sunset at General Tower; panoramic views at East/West Five-Eye Towers.
• Crowds: Much quieter than Badaling or Mutianyu — but weekends can still get busy.
• Time Needed: Half-day is enough for one route; a full day allows both East & West exploration.
⸻
✨ In short:
If you love photography and dramatic climbs, go East Route.
If you prefer gentler walks with great views, go West Route.
Either way, Jinshanling gives one of the most authentic Great Wall experiences.
