Slow Travel in Beigan, Matsu: Discovering the Gentle Passage of Time Between Wind and Stone

Many people come to Matsu to see Mazu or the Blue Tears, but I came to see the "Square Sea"!
Square Seas occur when two independent systems in opposite directions collide in the vast ocean and coastline, forming a grid of square waves resembling a chessboard. (Image caption)
To see the "Square Seas," you need the right time, location, and luck! Because they are formed by natural topography and tidal fluctuations, the Matsu Tourism Office is very considerate of tourists and announces the possible times to see the "Square Seas" every month!
To reach Xiju Island, you must first travel to Matsu's Nangan Island to take a ferry. There are only three ferry departures per day, so if you want to add in the time to see the "Square Seas," you must plan carefully!
