🏺 “From Ancient Pots to City Roots” — Matsumoto City Museum of Archaeology

#hellohalloween

Step back in time at the Matsumoto City Museum of Archaeology in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Located at 3738-1 Nakayama, Matsumoto, this museum was inaugurated in 1986 and stands on the rich archaeological ground of the region. It succeeds the earlier Nakayama Kōkokan dating to 1931.

Inside the museum, you’ll find a collection of over 20,000 items—of which approximately 1,800 are on display—including Jōmon pottery, Haji ware, bronze mirrors, glass beads, and tools from local sites such as the Mount Kōbōyama kofun and the Eriana Site. The exhibits trace human activity from Japan’s prehistoric era through to the Heian period.

Visiting is ideal for those curious about ancient Japan or regional heritage. Plan for about 1 to 1½ hours to explore the highlights. While specific hours and admission details weren’t located in the sources I checked, standard small-museum practice in Japan usually means open mornings to late afternoon and closed Mondays—so it’s advisable to check locally or via the museum’s website before your visit.
