[Osorezan Sacred Site/Osorezan Bodaiji Temple]

#JapanTravelGuide

Located in Mutsu City on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, Mount Osore is considered one of Japan's three most sacred mountains, along with Mount Hiei and Mount Koya.

It is said that in this area, "When a person dies, their soul goes to the mountain (Mount Osore)."

Surrounded by the outer rim of the volcano, this sacred site cannot be seen from the outside.

Entering the sacred area by crossing the arched bridge over the Sanzu River (currently closed to traffic), you'll be greeted by a landscape reminiscent of the afterlife, including the sulfurous smell of Jigokudani and Muken Jigoku.
Beyond this, the beautiful Gokurakuhama Beach awaits, reminiscent of the Pure Land.

Mount Osore Bodaiji Temple was founded in 862. It's said that Jikaku Daishi Ennin founded the temple after receiving a revelation in a dream.

Mount Osore is said to have erupted over 10,000 years ago, and hot springs with a lingering sulfurous scent still bubble up today.
There are four bathhouses within the sacred grounds, and worshippers can bathe for free.
