As for TACO RICE, its story begins after World War II, during the period when U.S. military forces were stationed in Okinawa. In 1984, a restaurant owner in Kin Town decided to cater to the American soldiers' longing for a taste of home by substituting rice for the traditional taco shell. The dish unexpectedly became a hit and has since evolved into a cultural phenomenon in Okinawa.

One notable spot to try TACO RICE is Pico Shokudo, located near Shuri Castle. This well-known restaurant has transformed a traditional old apartment into a cozy eatery. With only about ten seats, it has become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. The dish features spiced meat, shredded lettuce, corn chips, mayonnaise, rice, and hot sauce. At first bite, it resembles a taco, but as you chew, the sweetness and texture of the rice create a unique experience. The restaurant also offers homemade nostalgic pudding, allowing diners to savor a taste of Okinawa's history while enjoying their meal.
