Okinawa, Japan | Tamaudun: The Royal Mausoleum of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a Quiet Splendor Among Stone

Not far from Shuri Castle lies the tranquil yet majestic Tamaudun, a World Cultural Heritage site. This mausoleum, the royal mausoleum of the Second Sho Dynasty, has been the final resting place of the Ryukyu royal family since its construction in 1501 by King Sho Shin for his father, King Sho En.

Surrounded by a massive stone wall and a solemn main gate, Tamaudun's interior is divided into three stone mausoleums. The central hall houses the front hall, where the ashes of the king and his consorts are stored. To the east, the remains of the king and his consorts are placed, while to the west, the resting places of other royal family members are located. The overall layout is rigorous and solemn, reflecting the style of ancient Chinese mausoleums while incorporating unique Ryukyu stonework techniques.
