If you think Batam is just for shopping and massages, you're missing out on its hidden gems! This Indonesian island is the perfect, budget-friendly escape, offering everything from iconic landmarks to serene overwater retreats.
🏝️ A Perfect Batam Getaway (The Hidden Side)
Batam's appeal lies in its contrast. While the city buzzes, a short trip away reveals tranquility. I highly recommend allocating time for an experience like Telunas Resorts (near Batam). The photos you see of those beautiful overwater bungalows are not a distant dream! Telunas offers rustic, eco-friendly luxury with overwater villas where you can disconnect to reconnect.
Why I recommend it: My personal trip there was a total reset. With no TVs or strong Wi-Fi, you spend your time watching the turquoise water, kayaking, or simply enjoying the sea breeze on your private deck. It’s an exclusive, barefoot-luxury feeling that’s easy to reach from Batam's Sekupang terminal.
🦀 Don't Miss the Food & Sights
• Do See: The Barelang Bridge remains the island’s most iconic photo spot. Also, for a unique stay closer to the main island, check out places like Woda Villa & Spa or the resorts in the Nongsa area (like Nuvasa Bay) for stunning sea views and golf access.
• Do Eat: You cannot skip the seafood. Head to a kelong (floating restaurant) like Golden Prawn for the freshest Chilli Crab and Grilled Stingray (I still dream about the sambal!). For a local taste, hunt down the best Mie Tarempa (spicy noodles).
Do's
• Bargain Politely: When shopping at local market stalls or negotiating with non-app taxis, a polite smile and a little bargaining can save you money.
• Carry Cash (Rupiah): Smaller shops, street food vendors, and local massage parlours often only accept cash, so keep some Indonesian Rupiah handy.
• Use Ride-Hailing Apps: Download and use local apps like Grab or Gojek for reliable, clear-priced transportation around the island.
• Book Ahead: Book your ferry tickets, and any popular spa slots or specific resort stays (especially overwater bungalows), in advance, particularly for weekend trips.
• Eat Seafood: Make a point of visiting a kelong (floating restaurant) for the freshest dishes like Chilli Crab and Grilled Stingray with sambal.
❌ What Not to Do
• Don't Drink Tap Water: Stick exclusively to bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth to avoid getting sick.
• Don't Forget Sunscreen: The equatorial sun is incredibly strong. Always apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated throughout the day.
• Don't Skip Tipping: It is customary and appreciated to leave a small tip for massage therapists and other good service providers.
• Don't Overlook Local Food: While international chains are available, don't miss out on local delicacies like Mie Tarempa and Otak-Otak.
