【Hokkaido】Otaru Canal: A historic ice canal

In winter in Hokkaido, the Otaru Canal presents a dreamlike picture of ice and snow. This 1,140-meter-long canal is winding, with historic stone warehouses and old buildings on both sides.

The Otaru Canal was completed in 1923 and was originally built to facilitate small boats to transport goods from large ships. Over time, the canal completed its mission in 1986 and was partially filled and transformed into a walking path and green space. Today, the northern part still retains the original 40-meter-wide canal, making it a must-visit for tourists.

Walking slowly along the canal, you can walk from one end to the other in about 20 minutes. The cafes and restaurants along the way add warmth to the cold winter.
