The most famous attraction in Pisa is the Piazza dei Miracoli. There are three major buildings on the Piazza dei Miracoli - the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Cathedral of Pisa and the Baptistery of St. John.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, listed as a World Cultural Heritage, was originally designed as the bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral. At that time, the "cylindrical" bell tower was an epoch-making design. The original design was 8 floors (and vertical), but in 1185, when the fourth floor was built, it was found that the foundation was uneven and the soil was soft, so the construction was stopped. In 1231, the project continued and stopped again in 1278. After repeated construction and suspension, it was finally completed in 1372.
The cathedral is located in the center of the Piazza dei Miracoli. Its official name is the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta). In addition to being the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Pisa, it is also a masterpiece of medieval Romanesque architecture, representing the prestige and wealth of the Maritime Republic of Pisa. The current appearance of the church is the result of restoration works carried out in different eras.
The Baptistery is located in front of the Pisa Cathedral. It was built in 1152, but the building was not completed until the 14th century. The Baptistery is 54.86 meters high and 107.24 meters in circumference. It is currently the largest baptistery in Italy. The exterior is also a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.
If you have enough time, you can visit the interior and climb to the top of the leaning tower, but you must buy tickets in advance so that you don't have to queue and pay attention to crowd control. Booking tickets and tours on Trip.com is a good choice.
