📍Roluos Archaeological Complex・Pakhorn Temple|The Starting Point of Angkor Civilization

Although not as famous as Angkor Wat among travelers, Bakong Temple is the starting point of the entire Khmer Empire myth. Quietly nestled in the heart of the Roluos archaeological complex, it was the first state temple of the Angkor Empire.

I walked in under the afternoon sun that day. Few tourists were around, and the air was filled with the sound of wind against stone bricks. The temple is a multi-story, stepped pyramid, symbolizing Mount Meru—the abode of the gods in Hindu mythology. Ascending the stone steps, each level seems to lead you closer to a forgotten faith.

Compared to the later, magnificent Angkor architecture, Bakong's style is restrained, even a bit rough. Yet, it is precisely this primitiveness and fortitude that evokes the power of the Khmer Empire as it expanded its territory.

The surrounding small towers, vast pools, and ruined walls are all signs of time. If you'd like to see the earliest days of Angkor civilization, a walk here will give you the illusion of stepping back in time.
