Hanjiang's old town is a neighborhood full of nostalgic charm — Luomutian. Every time you come here, it feels like you've taken a time machine back to your childhood.
The characters "Luomu" hold the roots of the old street. Legend has it that in ancient times, this area was crisscrossed with waterways, and residents mainly made a living by planting "luomu" (a type of vegetable). Later, as the water receded and became streets, the name "Luomutian" was firmly remembered, transforming from farmers' fields into a commercial district's address.
After the Ming and Qing dynasties, Hanjiang prospered because of its waterways, and Luomutian evolved into a "Little Shanghai." The streets here are narrow, with bluestone slabs polished shiny by centuries of footsteps. Rows of arcade buildings stand side by side, their wooden window frames carved with intricate patterns, faintly revealing the old "shop in front, residence in back" layout.
Merchant ships sailed from Mulan Creek, docking at the wharf at the alley entrance, unloading silk from Suzhou and Hangzhou, sugarcane from southern Fujian, and carrying away local seafood and handcrafted lacquerware.
Today, Luomutian has shed the bustle of commerce but retains the most authentic Puyang life. Weathered brick walls are covered with vines, and in the old tailor shops, elderly craftsmen still carefully sew with thimbles; in front of tea stalls at corners, amid curling tea smoke, time seems to slow down. Well-preserved Ming and Qing ancient houses hang oil-paper lanterns under flying eaves that gently sway in the wind.
Red brick ancient houses, small bridges over flowing water, and black-awning boats can be seen everywhere on the streets, as if telling stories of the past.
