Quanzhou's lesser-known destinations: Streets within alleys, alleys within streets – step into a vibrant maritime merchant community

The ancient architectural complex of Tukeng Village in Quangang, dating back to the mid-Qing Dynasty, covers an area of over 20,000 square meters and boasts dozens of preserved ancient houses. The complex, oriented northwest and southeast, forms a neat rectangular plan. In 2019, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Site in the eighth batch.

Two rows of ancient houses face each other, forming a commercial and residential street. Pawnshops, herbal medicine shops, academies, and numerous other commercial facilities are scattered throughout the street. The interwoven layout of streets and alleys, clustered around ancient courtyards, creates a unique maritime merchant settlement characterized by "streets within alleys, alleys within streets."

Details within and outside the buildings, such as the brick carvings on the Baiwan Mansion and the painted tiles on the Shibu Pawnshop, reflect the exquisite craftsmanship of the time. These details, such as the brick carvings on the Baiwan Mansion and the painted tiles on the Shibu Pawnshop, showcase the traditional red brick and maritime culture of southern Fujian.

🕐 This ancient architectural complex is well-preserved overall, with some houses still inhabited. The atmosphere is rich with local life, free of commercialism, making for a truly enjoyable visit. You can plan a stroll of about an hour, focusing on the Baiwan Mansion, Shibu Pawnshop, Zhaoyuan Jinshi Residence, Changchuntang Pharmacy, Wanjie Thirteen Hongs, Xiuhualou, Laipu Pawnshop, and Jianzhen Mansion.

🚗 We recommend taking a taxi or driving there. Simply search for "Tukeng Village Ancient Buildings" in your navigation. Buses run infrequently here, and there's a parking lot in the scenic area, making driving quite convenient.
