[Osaka] Sakai City, Sen no Rikyu Residence Site

#AbsolutelyFreeTrip

The ruins of Sen no Rikyu's residence are located right next to Sakai Risho no Mori.
The ruins of the residence include a camellia well and a well house built with old materials from the Daitokuji temple gate, which is associated with Rikyu.

Sen no Rikyu was born in Sakai and perfected wabi-cha tea.
Sen no Rikyu was born in 1522 as Yoshiro, the eldest son of a merchant in Sakai Imaichi-cho (currently Shukuin Nishi 1-chome).
He learned the tea ceremony from Kitamuki Dochin, and later studied under Takeno Joo and Tsuji Gen'ya, perfecting wabi-cha tea.
He made a connection with Nobunaga through the tea ceremony, and after Nobunaga's death, he served Hideyoshi as his tea master and was active as a tea master, such as overseeing the large tea ceremonies in Kitano, but later incurred Hideyoshi's wrath and committed suicide in 1591.
He was the founder of the current Sen school of tea ceremony and was called "the greatest tea master in the world."

A camellia well remains at the site of the mansion, and it is said that camellia charcoal was sunk to the bottom.

The well house was built using old materials from the gate of Daitokuji Temple, which is associated with Rikyu.
