[Osaka] Sakai Specialty: Kanbukuro's Walnut Mochi

#AbsolutelyFreeTravel

In a corner of the old Sakai city center since the Muromachi period, you'll find "Kanbukuro," famous for its walnut mochi.
The Edo-period building was destroyed in a war, but the taste of their walnut mochi remains unchanged.
It's so well-known in Sakai that the shop is always packed.

Kanbukuro's origins date back to 1329, at the end of the Kamakura period, when Izumiya Tokubei opened a mochi shop under the name "Izumiya."
There's also an anecdote that Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave the shop its name.

Kanbukuro's signature product, "Kurumi Mochi," is a Japanese confectionery consisting of mochi wrapped in a light green bean paste made from green soybeans.
As a fresh confection, it has a best-by date on the day of purchase and cannot be ordered online.
It's a must-try treat when visiting Sakai.
In the summer, the only option is "Koori Kurumi Mochi" (Korean walnut mochi) topped with shaved ice. ✨

Please note that the shop closes once sold out.
There's also a parking lot.
