Wat Doi Phrathat Pha Luang is an ancient temple located on a high hill in San Sai District, Chiang Mai Province. With a history spanning over 700 years, it was built during the reign of King Kuena. The temple's unique feature that makes it an 'Unseen' attraction of Lanna is the principal Buddha image, 'Phra Bin Lang Tam,' which faces away from worshippers. This symbolizes a profound teaching that merit-making should not be done for show. Inside the vihara, there is a footprint of the Buddha engraved on a stone slab, and the stunning Sri Pha Luang Chedi, adorned with hundreds of glass pieces, stands majestically on a high hill with over 100 steps flanked by two Naga statues.
The atmosphere around the temple is peaceful and surrounded by lush nature, making it ideal for meditation and Vipassana practice. Additionally, there is a legend about a large stone platform where the Buddha once dined, adding to the sacred and historical significance of the site. The temple is conveniently accessible from Maejo University, with a short drive up the hill. If you are looking for a tranquil place to pay respects and experience the charm of Lanna culture, Wat Doi Phrathat Pha Luang is a destination not to be missed.
