⛩️ A shrine that holds memories of Sendai City

Miyagiken Gokoku Shrine (宮城縣護國神社) is the prefectural shrine of Miyagi Prefecture, located on the site of the former Sendai Castle.

Miyagiken Gokoku Shrine was founded in 1904 to honor the soldiers and civilians from Miyagi Prefecture who died in the war. It is one of several “護國神社” (護國神社) throughout the country, reflecting the nation-building philosophy of the Meiji era. However, in modern times, the shrine has become more of a place of remembrance than a tribute to war. People come to pray for peace, pray for the health of their families, and pass on their prayers to their descendants.

Front of the entrance is a row of tall pine trees, and a towering vermilion torii gate welcomes visitors. The faint sound of a brass bell is heard as a middle-aged man pulls the string, clasps his hands together, claps his hands twice, and bows his head—a simple yet reverent sanpai (参拝) ritual. The sound of the bell is believed to awaken the gods to the arrival of humans.

The walls are hung with ema (wooden plaques) and prayers from people of all ages. Some plaques read “願成就” (ganjōjū), meaning “May your wishes be fulfilled,” a simple expression reflecting the small hopes of humans, those who simply wish for a little better things in the coming year.

Near the worship hall, a hyōtan—a red and gold bottle gourd—is hung as a good luck charm.

Legend has it that bottle gourds are vessels for storing life force and warding off evil. Many families bring their children to take photos with smiles—a small image that perfectly blends faith and common happiness.

Every October 23rd, the shrine holds the Reitaisai (例大祭) festival, a memorial for the deceased. A procession of taiko drums, lanterns, and colorful kimonos fills the courtyard. Unfortunately, we arrived just a day late, and the event was quiet afterward.

As we walked back down from the shrine in the evening, the bells rang in our minds. It wasn't a ritual sound, but a call to shared memories.

“With every bell that rings, a prayer is sent to the sky, and with every breath of those who pass by, There's one story of this city that's still unfinished.
