Tucked away in the serene southern reaches of Jeju Island, the Museum of Chusa Kim Jeong-Hyui stands as a thoughtful homage to one of Korea’s greatest calligraphers and scholars.
Within its quietly designed modern halls, visitors can trace the life of Kim Jeong‑Hyui — known by his pen name “Chusa” — from his scholarly beginnings through to his years of exile and artistic triumph. The museum highlights his signature “Chusa font”, the masterpiece painting Sehando (Winter Scene), letters, rubbings and other relics that showcase his unique blend of intellect, art and personal resolve.
More than a gallery, the museum’s architecture and setting reflect Chusa’s spirit: the building is partially submerged into the earth, accessed via a gentle descent — a symbolic nod to the scholar’s exile and inner journey. Visitors emerge into a quiet space where one of Chusa’s own round-windows appears framed among pine trees, inviting reflection on both his art and his life.
Whether you’re absorbed by the elegance of traditional Korean calligraphy, curious about scholarly lives in the Joseon era, or simply seeking a peaceful cultural stop in Jeju, this museum offers a beautifully meditative experience.
