Gyeongbokgung Palace, located in the heart of Seoul, was built in 1395 by King Taejo, the first ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, as the main palace and center of government.
The palace was destroyed by numerous wars, most notably the Japanese invasion in 1592, but was rebuilt in the 19th century by Prince Daewongun.
