The Sacred Heart Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or “Shishi” (Stone House), is a prominent Gothic-style Catholic cathedral located in Guangzhou’s Yuexiu District. Constructed entirely of granite, it stands as one of the few all-stone Gothic cathedrals worldwide and is the largest of its kind in China and Southeast Asia .
Construction began in 1863 under the guidance of French architects and was completed in 1888, taking 25 years to finish. The cathedral features twin towers reaching 58.5 meters, a nave flanked by side chapels, and 98 stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes. Notably, Chinese craftsmanship is evident in elements like the use of glutinous rice mortar and lion-shaped water spouts .
Despite suffering damage during historical conflicts, including the Cultural Revolution, the cathedral has been restored and remains a significant religious and architectural landmark. It is open to visitors daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with free admission.
