Drive 80 km from downtown Huangshan to reach Yangchan Tulou.
As you step into the scattered Tulou cluster nestled in the valleys of Huangshan, the setting sun paints the rammed earth walls amber. The rounded eaves hang like the curves of a Tai Chi symbol, and the gentle tinkling of wind chimes awakens six centuries of slumber. Run your hand over the cracked rammed earth walls, the coarse rice husk and gravel prickling your palm, as if touching the scorching sweat of the ancestors who built them. Look up from the courtyard, and 72 wooden windows frame 72 patches of sky, each pane concealing family stories of curling smoke from cooking fires. A breeze whispers through the corridors, carrying the scent of pine smoke and tea, and you can almost see women in homespun clothing embroidering by the "beauty lean" window sills, and children playing around the fragrant osmanthus trees. These Tulou are not just buildings; they are three-dimensional family trees written in earth, offering a place of rootedness for modern wanderers.
