A Glimpse of Taisho-Era Japan at Tachibana Taisho Minka-en

#hellohalloween

Step back in time at Tachibana Taisho Minka-en (Former Koyama Residence) — a beautifully preserved Japanese house built in 1917, now designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by Sumida Ward. Miraculously surviving both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo air raids, this historical gem offers a rare look at early 20th-century life in Tokyo.

What makes this house especially unique is its blend of architectural styles: it reflects both noka (farmer’s house) and machiya (townhouse) characteristics. Originally thatched, the roof was converted to tile in the 1930s, yet many features — such as the original glass window panes — remain untouched since its construction.

Inside, you’ll find dual entrances, an impressive altar room with both a Shinto kamidana and Buddhist butsudan, and spacious tatami rooms that evoke the lifestyle of a wealthy landowner. The surrounding garden, lush with greenery, adds to the peaceful atmosphere.

The best part? Entry is completely free, both for the house and garden. A hidden historical haven in the middle of modern Tokyo.
