There are three categories of World Heritage sites: natural heritage sites, cultural heritage sites, and mixed heritage sites that have characteristics of both. As of 2024, there are 1,223 World Heritage sites registered, of which only 40 are mixed heritage sites. Mount Taishan is one of the few mixed heritage sites registered. Incidentally, there are no mixed heritage sites in Japan, and many people may know that Mount Fuji was initially applied for as a natural heritage site but was rejected and was registered as a cultural heritage site.
Mount Taishan and Mount Fuji are considered friendship mountains. It is said that this began in 2007 when Premier Wen Jiabao said, "The foundation of friendship between the people of China and Japan will never be shaken, just like Mount Taishan and Mount Fuji," in the interest of Japan-China friendship. Both are mountains of faith, and Mount Taishan is the most worshiped of the Five Mountains of Taoism, a sacred site.
Mount Taishan has been the site of many emperors' Fengshan (a ceremony in which the emperor informs the heavens and the earth of his accession to the throne and gives thanks for peace throughout the world), and the Tangma Cliff Monument, completed in 726, is a must-see on Daguan Peak.
Moreover, the sunrise and sunset scenery is fantastic and truly spectacular. It is a must-see.
