The Xiahai City God Temple has a rich history that traces back to Tong'an County in Quanzhou. During the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Wuzong bestowed the name "Xiahai City God Temple" upon the temple at Linhai Gate. The Songshan Xiahai City God Temple was originally established by merchants who sought blessings for safe voyages and prosperous business ventures. Over time, local residents and businesses began worshiping there, and stories of its efficacy spread widely. In 1975, local gentry pooled their resources to construct the temple at its current location.
In 2009, it is said that temple staff received instructions from the City God in a dream to begin worshiping the Five Wealth Gods and the Tiger Lord on the first floor. Due to the growing reputation of their effectiveness, more and more companies and individuals seeking financial blessings started visiting. On the day of our visit, it coincided with the birthday and ritual ceremony of the Middle Wealth God, and the temple was bustling with worshippers. The Black Tiger General, in particular, is believed to oversee the Mountain of Gold Ingots, making it a popular deity among stock investors.
The second floor houses the Medicine Buddha and the Matchmaker God, creating a unique blend of Buddhist and Taoist cultures. The side hall on the first floor is dedicated to the Great Lord and the Earth God, covering prayers for safety, wealth, love, and health. This temple has become a central hub of faith in the Songshan area.
