Mysteriousness like a sumi-e painting

Located in the heart of Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Hida Folk Village (飛騨の里) is basically a time machine for anyone obsessed with traditional Japan vibes. This open-air museum brings together over 30 historic houses from the Hida region—think epic gassho-style farmhouses with steeeeep thatched roofs that’ll make your IG feed pop! You’ll also spot rustic storehouses and workshops that are pure countryside goals.
Strolling around here is a major mood. There’s a super tranquil pond at the center, surrounded by lush trees and charming old buildings. Even if the sky’s all moody and cloudy (like during my visit!), the whole place feels chill and peaceful. You can go inside most houses, where you’ll find displays of ancient tools, old-school furniture, and household stuff that show how rural life used to roll waaaay back. Total throwback!
Sometimes, you’ll catch local artisans doing craft demos—like weaving, wood carving, or pottery—so you can get a hands-on slice of tradition. Don’t be shy; try making something if you’re feeling crafty!
It’s an easy walk thanks to smooth paths and signs in both English and Japanese. I recommend spending 1-2hours here—perfect for taking your time, soaking in the mountain village vibes, and snapping pics of those sthetic views. But you can do the recommended route that takes you one round the pond in 20 mins. The other areas will require you to climb stairs.
Planning a visit? Here’s the lowdown:
