Samet Nangshe Viewpoint is one of those places worth waking up at 3 a.m. for. It's not just a viewpoint, but, without exaggeration, one of the most breathtaking panoramas in all of Thailand.
What is Samet Nangshe Viewpoint?
Imagine standing atop a limestone hill, overlooking the endless Phang Nga Bay. Dozens of green-covered kates jut out of the emerald water, and in the distance, the sun rises, painting the sky in unreal pink and orange hues. That's Samet Nangshe.
This spot has become a real hit with photographers and nature lovers thanks to its absolutely epic view.
Why is it essential to watch the sunrise?
Magical Lighting: Early morning light is soft and diffused. Fog and clouds often add a mystical and dimensional feel to the scene. The view of the limestone cliffs in the rays of the rising sun is a sight that will stay with you forever.
· Cool: The climb to the viewpoint requires some effort, and doing so in the pre-dawn coolness is much more comfortable than in the midday heat.
· Less crowded: Although the site is popular, it is still much less crowded at sunrise than during the day.
Important: Visiting during the day, especially on a sunny day, is not a good idea. The panorama will be bathed in harsh light and may appear flat, and the climb in the scorching sun will be unpleasant.
How to get there from Phuket
Samat Nangshe is located in Phang Nga Province, on the mainland. The drive from Phuket takes approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.
Your sunrise plan:
1. Departure from Phuket: Book a taxi or transfer with a fixed price. You'll need to leave your hotel around 3:00 - 3:30 AM to catch the sunrise (around 5:30 - 6:00 AM, depending on the season).
· Taxi fare (roundtrip with waiting): ~2,000 - 3,000 baht. Be sure to agree that the driver will wait a few hours to take you back, as catching a ride back is almost impossible.
2. Alternatively, rent a motorbike: Only for experienced drivers! Driving through the winding roads at night can be tiring. But it will give you more freedom.
3. Route: Drivers know this place. The landmark is the Takua Thung district in Phang Nga province.
What awaits you there: The final climb
When you reach the coordinates, you'll find yourself at the foot of the hill. There's a small parking lot, a cafe (which will open later), and the final climb.
You have three options:
1. Hiking: This is a fairly steep hike. It will take about 15-25 minutes, depending on your fitness level. Bring water and a flashlight (the one in your phone will do).
2. Pickup (recommended): For an additional fee (~50-100 baht per person each way), you'll be driven in the back of a pickup truck up the steep road almost to the very top. This will save you time and energy. From the pickup's final stop, it's literally a 2-3-minute walk to the summit.
3. New Viewpoint: Next to the old one, a new, more comfortable viewpoint with binoculars has been added. Access to it is also by pickup.
Practical Tips
Best Time to Visit: Dry season from November to April. At this time, there are fewer clouds and a better chance of a clear, beautiful sunrise.
What to bring:
Flashlight or phone with a flashlight.
Water and a light snack.
Mosquito repellent (there's mosquito repellent in the jungle!).
Warm clothing (yes, in Thailand!). It can be quite windy and cool at the summit at sunrise, especially after the heat of Phuket.
A good camera and power bank.
Difficulty: Easy/moderate if you use a pickup truck. The hike up requires some physical fitness.
