The Edo Six Jizo were commissioned by Jizo-bo Shogen in Hoei 3 (1706), with donations collected over 14 years, and were erected at six temples located at the Edo gateways of major highways: Shinagawa-dera (Tokaido, Shinagawa Ward), Tozen-ji (Oshu Kaido, Taito Ward), Taiso-ji (Koshu Kaido, Shinjuku Ward), Shinseiji (Nakasendo, Toshima Ward), Reigan-ji (Chiba Kaido, Koto Ward), and Eitai-ji (Mito Kaido, Koto Ward, no longer existing) in order of construction. The casting was done by metalworker Ota Suruga-no-kami Fujiwara Masanori from Kanda Nabemachi.
The Edo Six Jizo at Shinseiji was the fourth to be erected (third in the pilgrimage order) in Shoto 4 (1714). It is a so-called "Joroku" Buddha statue, 2.7 meters tall, which was once gilded. In Bunkyu 3 (1863), parts of the jewel and lotus petals were repaired. It was also repaired after damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake in Taisho 12 (1923), and suffered damage again during the air raid on April 13, Showa 20 (1945). It was originally located closer to Nakasendo but was moved to its current location in Showa 35 (1960) due to the widening of Nakasendo.
