This isn't Europe, but it exudes a distinctly European atmosphere. This is the Tokyo Cathedral of the Resurrection in Ochanomizu. Let me start with my conclusion: paying for admission is highly recommended.
The 35-meter-tall Tokyo Cathedral of the Resurrection, also known as Nikolai's Cathedral, is named after Nikolai Kassadkin, the first missionary to introduce Eastern Orthodoxy to Japan. Its dome and white walls exude a rich Byzantine style. Completed in 1891, it boasts a 134-year history.
The designer was Shichupov, then a professor at the Russian Technical University, and the supervisor was Josiah Kant, architect of Rokumeikan. The dome collapsed and was damaged by a devastating earthquake, and restoration wasn't carried out until 1929.
It was very hot that day, but once inside, despite the fan, I didn't feel the heat at all. The stained glass windows, bathed in light, created a sacred and tranquil atmosphere. Photography is prohibited inside, but the high ceilings, the iconostasis behind the altar, and the walls adorned with gold and silver leaf create an exotic atmosphere. It's open weekdays from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. The staff are friendly and come from a family of grandparents.
📍Address: 4 Chome-1-3 Kanda Surugadai, Chiyoda City, Tokyo 101-0062, Japan
