That Dam
🌿An ancient pagoda located in the middle of the roundabout of Chantha Khoumane and Bartholonie streets in the heart of Vientiane. It is said that it was once covered with gold that was stolen during the war with Siam in 1827. Only the soil and bricks that were covered until they turned black are visible.

🐍Lao people believe that the seven-headed Naga lives under the Black Pagoda. During the time when Vientiane was invaded by the Siamese army in 1827 (around the reign of King Rama III), the Naga emerged to protect the city from destruction. This legend has made the Black Pagoda a symbol of protection of the city and the power of nature.
