Travel Guide for the Tasha Ancient Trail

Follow in the footsteps of Xuanzang and venture into the snow-capped, intertwined mysteries of the Western Region.

Here is a travel guide for the Tasha Ancient Trail:

Preparation:
- Documents: Obtain a border pass in advance and carry valid identification such as your ID card.
- Clothing: Prepare according to the season. In spring, focus on warmth and protection against the cold; in summer, prioritize sunscreen and hydration; in autumn, bring a thick jacket; in winter, equip yourself with extreme cold-weather gear.
- Vehicle and supplies: It is recommended to drive a four-wheel-drive SUV. Check the vehicle's performance before departure and bring emergency tools such as snow chains and a jack. Prepare sufficient drinking water, high-energy food, spare tires, and fuel additives.
- Other items: Pack sunglasses, sunscreen, warm gloves, and a sleeping bag liner. Carry common medications such as cold medicine, stomach medicine, motion sickness pills, and altitude sickness remedies.

Route Planning:
- Tashkurgan to Shache direction: Start from Tashkurgan, passing through Kukushilik Township to admire ancient apricot trees and the original Tajik village scenery. Proceed to Datong Township, where you can enjoy apricot blossoms in March and April or escape the summer heat. Then head to Tal Township to visit stone houses and experience local customs. Finally, arrive in Shache to explore attractions like the Yarkand Khan Mausoleum.
- Shache to Tashkurgan direction: This route is the reverse of the above, starting from Shache and heading towards Tashkurgan. You can still enjoy the beauty and charm of the ancient trail.

Accommodation:
- Homestays: Kukushilik Township, Datong Township, and Tal Township offer a few affordable homestays where you can experience Tajik life.
- Camping: You can camp in open river valleys, but avoid riverbeds and cliffs. Obtain permission from local residents in advance and be mindful of mosquitoes and wild animals.

Food Recommendations:
- Tashkurgan: Try specialties like grilled lamb skewers, pilaf, and naan-baked meat.
- Shache: Enjoy traditional dishes such as pigeon soup, almond naan, and rice sausage with lung.

Important Notes:
- Safe Driving: The road conditions are complex, with approximately 60% being unpaved. Some sections are narrow and steep, so control your speed and avoid driving while fatigued.
- Weather Awareness: In summer, be cautious of mudslides and landslides caused by heavy rain. In winter, watch out for snow and ice on the roads.
- Respect Customs: Respect Tajik customs and avoid photographing homes or people without permission.
- Environmental Awareness: The ancient trail's ecosystem is fragile. Do not litter and adhere to the "Leave No Trace" principle.
