Daxingshan Temple (大兴善寺) is a historic Buddhist temple situated in Yanta District of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, originally founded in 266 CE by Emperor Wu of the Western Jin dynasty, making it one of China’s oldest temples . It rose to prominence during the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE) as the cradle of Chinese Esoteric (Vajrayana) Buddhism, where masters Śubhakarasiṃha, Vajrabodhi, and Amoghavajra taught and translated key sutras . Although the original complex was destroyed in later persecutions and conflicts, today’s temple buildings are largely modern reconstructions completed in the 20th century, featuring traditional halls—such as the Shanmen, Mahavira Hall, and Guanyin Hall—arranged along a central axis .
