Xi’an: Where History Breathes and Warriors Stand Still

At the very center of Xi’an, the Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower (鼓楼) stand as twin symbols of the city’s history and culture. Built in the Ming Dynasty over 600 years ago, these iconic towers once marked time for the ancient capital — the bell rang at dawn, and the drum beat at dusk.
📍 Bell Tower (钟楼)
A grand wooden structure with sweeping eaves and green tiles, the Bell Tower offers panoramic views of the city’s four main streets radiating outward. Inside, you’ll find a massive bronze bell and exhibits on Xi’an’s history. Don’t miss the short live performances of traditional Chinese music.
📍 Drum Tower (鼓楼)
Just a few minutes’ walk away, the Drum Tower houses giant drums once used to signal the day’s end. Today, it features a collection of beautifully decorated drums and hosts daily drumming performances that echo through the square.
Visiting both towers at night is a treat — they’re illuminated in warm golden light, surrounded by the buzz of nearby Muslim Quarter street food stalls.
