Autumn Self-Drive on the Wan-Zhe Sky Road: Entering the Golden Corridor in the Clouds

Autumn Self-Drive on the Wan-Zhe Sky Road: Entering the Golden Corridor in the Clouds

Autumn here is not found in the scenic spots, but in the unexpected views after every bend.

Last Saturday at six in the morning, we set off from Ji County’s Jiapeng Township. The mountain mist had not yet lifted, and the terraced fields and ancient villages appeared faintly below. The car window seemed like a rolling frame of a landscape painting.

The rice waves in the Meiganling Terraces were golden. We met a local elder drying corn and helped spread two trays, in exchange for his homemade sesame sugar cakes. Standing on the viewing platform, taking a bite of the cake and a breath of the scenery, the sweet fragrance mixed with the mountain breeze—this is the taste of autumn.

Driving on the core section of the Sky Road with 351 bends, my friend in the passenger seat held the handle tightly the whole way. But every turn was a surprise—the suddenly appearing Fanzhen Peak gleamed under the sunlight, the Bijia Peak was covered in colorful autumn forests, and when we stopped to take photos, we even found a few fallen wild chestnuts.

Practical Tips:

· 🚗 Route: Jixi County Town → Jiapeng Township → Wan-Zhe Sky Road → Jingzhou Township, about 30 kilometers in total
· 📅 Best Time: Late October to mid-November, when autumn colors are richest
· 🍁 Must-Stop Spots: Meiganling Terraces, Lover’s Waterfall, Bijia Peak Viewing Platform
· 🍜 Food: Jixi fried vermicelli and native chicken soup at Jingzhou Township farmhouses
· 💡 Reminder: Beginners beware! Must be driven by experienced drivers, many sharp and frequent bends

When the sunset dyed the entire Sky Road golden, we stopped by the roadside to watch villagers drying trays of crops, and suddenly understood—the most beautiful autumn colors are hidden in the unexpected encounters after these bends.
