A golden pagoda in the heart of Yangon

Sule Pagoda

Located in the heart of Yangon, this pagoda has a long history dating back to both Yangon and Burma. Built approximately 2,000 years ago, legend has it that it preceded the Shwedagon Pagoda, making it a relatively ancient and revered landmark among the Burmese.

The Sule Pagoda was originally shaped like a mound, likely influenced by Indian stupas.

The current octagonal pagoda, standing approximately 144 feet tall, stands prominently in the heart of Yangon. It can be seen from the overpass across the street or from the tall buildings surrounding it.

We visited during the time when the pagoda was undergoing some renovations, so we didn't get to see its full beauty. The pagoda grounds are still full of worshippers, and the atmosphere is peaceful and shady.

Admission fee is approximately 70-100 baht.

Opening hours: 4:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Location: Junction of Sule Pagoda Road, Maha Bandula Road, Yangon 11141
