Zermatt's 5 Lakes Trek: Stellisee

On this trip, I visited Stellisee, a mirror-like lake reflecting the Matterhorn! 🇨🇭💧🏔️

🛄 | The Alpine Path from Blauherd
Stellisee is a high-altitude lake accessible via a 15-minute hike from Blauherd station. The trail is gently sloped, surrounded by wildflowers and meadows. The sound of cowbells echoed in the distance with the breeze, and the air was filled with the scent of earth and grass. As I walked, the Matterhorn grew closer, and its presence became more striking as I approached the lake.

🌿 A Mirror of the Alps Reflecting Sky and Mountains
When I finally reached the lakeside, the view was truly breathtaking. The calm surface of the lake perfectly mirrored the triangular silhouette of the Matterhorn, and the reflection seemed even sharper than reality. When the wind stopped, the lake became a flawless mirror, capturing both the sky and the mountains like a painting. Small hills covered with rocks and moss surrounded the area, offering different perspectives depending on where you sat.

🏔️ The Golden Moment of Sunrise
This spot is especially stunning at sunrise. As the first rays of sunlight gradually descend from the peak of the Matterhorn, the entire mountain is bathed in golden light, which is simultaneously reflected in the lake. This phenomenon, known as 'Alpenglow,' is why many travelers visit early in the morning. Despite the chilly dawn air, the sight warms you to the core.

1️⃣ How to Get There – Zermatt → Sunnegga → Blauherd (via gondola), followed by a 15-minute walk. The trail is well-marked and easy to navigate.
2️⃣ Best Time to Visit – Just after sunrise (around 6:00–7:00 AM) or in the morning. In the afternoon, backlighting can weaken the reflections.
3️⃣ Essentials – Morning temperatures are low, so bring warm clothing and a hot drink. If you're taking photos, a tripod is a must.
