Swiss Zermatt's 5 Lakes Trek: Leisee

On this trip, I visited Leisee, the lake where you can enjoy the warmest view of the Matterhorn! 🇨🇭💧🏔️✨

🛄 | A peaceful lake just below the Sunnegga Viewpoint
Leisee is a high-altitude lake located below the Sunnegga Viewpoint, marking the final section of Zermatt's 5-Seenweg (5 Lakes Trail). Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,232 meters, it is easily accessible with gentle trails, making it a popular destination for families. As you walk down the path, the serene lake reveals itself amidst trees and meadows. The air was refreshing, and the blue sky was perfectly reflected on the water's surface.

While Leisee may not be as grand as Stellisee or Grindjisee, it exudes a warm and peaceful atmosphere. The shallow and calm waters mirror the silhouette of the Matterhorn clearly when the wind subsides. Around the lake, wooden decks and benches are available for visitors to sit and enjoy the simultaneous view of the mountains and the lake. The sight of children walking along the water's edge following ducks, combined with the shadow of the Matterhorn, created a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

🏞️ A relaxing Alpine retreat for families
Leisee also features a small playground and picnic area for children. During summer, visitors can enjoy water activities, and the laughter of people dipping their feet in the water could be heard. Wildflowers bloom along the lake's edge, and the distant sound of cowbells added to the tranquil atmosphere. The serene air and warm sunlight of the Sunnegga area made it a perfect spot to rest and forget the fatigue of hiking for a while.

1️⃣ Route – From Zermatt, take the Sunnegga Express funicular, then walk about 5 minutes from the station.
2️⃣ Recommended Time – In the morning, the reflection of the Matterhorn is sharp, while the afternoon offers soft sunlight, ideal for family picnics.
3️⃣ Essentials – Bring a mat, light snacks, and sunscreen. In summer, the sun is strong, so a hat and sunglasses are a must.
4️⃣ Hiking Connection – If you've completed the 5 Lakes Trail, take a break at Leisee before heading back up to the Sunnegga Viewpoint for a photo with the Matterhorn in the background.
