Baoguang Temple

宝光寺

Located on the outskirts of Xindu County, 18 kilometers from Chengdu, it covers an area of 90,000 square meters. Legend has it that it was first built in the Eastern Han Dynasty and named Dashi Temple during the Sui Dynasty. In 881 AD, after Huang Chao captured Chang'an, Emperor Xizong of Tang fled to Shu. He built a temporary palace behind the temple and ordered the reconstruction of the temple and pagoda, renaming it Baoguang Temple. During the Song Dynasty, it boasted 3,000 monks and reached its peak. Destroyed by war in the Ming Dynasty, it was renovated and expanded during the Qing Dynasty, reaching its current size. Baoguang Temple faces north and south, symmetrically along its central axis. Facing the main gate are the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Relic Pagoda, the Seven Buddha Hall, the Main Hall, the Sutra Library, and the Purple Cloud Mountain. Flanking these halls are the Zen Hall, the Dharma Hall, the Precepts Hall, and the Dining Hall, all equipped for rituals. The halls are magnificent, with intricate carvings on doors, windows, eaves, and arches. The over 400 stone pillars showcase the mastery of ancient architecture. To the east of the temple is the Arhat Hall, housing statues of three Buddhas, six Bodhisattvas, fifty patriarchs, and five hundred Arhats. Each statue stands two meters tall, painted in gold, and features exquisite forms and a unique expression. The temple's stupa, built during the Tang Dynasty, is a 30-meter-tall, 13-story, square brick pagoda with dense eaves. Each floor features four carved Buddha statues, and bronze bells hang from its corners. The temple also houses the Thousand Buddha Stele, a stone stupa dating from the second year of the Liang Dynasty's Datong reign, a stupa carved during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, and the monks' cherished "Three Treasures": relics, Udumbara flowers, and palm-leaf scriptures.

For those outside the world, there is no fixed law, and then they know that it is not the law;

Things in the world are never over, so why not leave them unresolved?

Baoguang Temple is located in the northern Xindu area of Chengdu. It is said to have been built in the Eastern Han Dynasty and was originally named Dashi Temple. In the Tang Dynasty, it was renamed Baoguang Temple. It is listed as one of the "Four Great Jinglan" in Chengdu, along with Wenshu Monastery, Zhaojue Temple, and Caotang Temple; and one of the "Four Great Jungles" in the Yangtze River Basin, along with Chengdu Wenshu Monastery, Zhenjiang Jinshan Temple, and Yangzhou Gaomin Temple.

The temple's stupa leans slightly westward, earning it the nickname "the Leaning Pagoda of the East." Legend has it that during an ancient earthquake, the pagoda was on the verge of collapse. Buddhists risked their lives to protect it, moving the Emperor of Heaven, who dispatched four deities, each as tall as the pagoda, to support it. One of them exerted too much force, and the pagoda has tilted westward ever since. Over the millennium since its construction, the Baoguang Temple stupa has remained free of moss, weeds, bird droppings, and cobwebs. It is hailed as a symbol of purity, awakening the world, and truly a "Pure Pagoda."

Across the Tiantai Scenic Spot is the Arhat Hall, a "田"-shaped structure with four atriums. In the center is the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, with other statues surrounding the "田" character. The four layers of statues, connected by a "十" in the middle, create a winding passageway. "This is the Tiantai, where the statues reveal five hundred Arhats; it's like the true Buddha realm, and the hall opens to three thousand Dharma realms."

In addition to the statues of Bodhisattva, Baoguang Temple also has statues of Yang Tinghe and his son Yang Shen.

I went there to do some business, and after I was done I searched for scenic spots in the surrounding area. Then I found that there was a Baoguang Temple ten kilometers away. It was very famous, so I went there. There were not many people there, including Tibetan monks and foreigners. I gained a lot. It gave me an answer to the questions I had when I read the biography of Sakyamuni. It may not be the truth, but at least it gave me an answer.

There are three things here that are worth seeing and understanding for those who truly seek the truth.

First, from a theoretical perspective, I have given an answer to the truth I am seeking: ignorance.

This is probably what I think is my biggest gain today. However, most people went to see the architecture and the Arhat statues, not this. After all, there are very few people who go there seeking truth. Some come to pray for children, wealth, or to repent for bad deeds. Anyway, I see very few people with kind faces, most of them have hostile intent. This is the information board on the right side of the entrance.

The second is the real relics. There is a stupa at the entrance. The real relics should have Buddha's light, but only those with the third eye can see the Buddha's light. Although you can't see it, you can also bathe in the Buddha's light by walking around. The premise is that your heart is good. If there is evil in your heart, the evil soul will be shattered by the Buddha's light.

Finally, there is the pagoda forest where the great monks of all generations passed away. I can’t remember their names. Each 2-meter-high pagoda has a brief introduction of the monk, but I wonder if anyone can read all of them. First, there are few people there, and people with bad auras can’t stay in the forest. Second, the words are very small, so you need to be very close to the pagodas. Third, we can’t disturb them. After reading the resume of a great monk, I felt a little overwhelmed and left. It was just me and my mother there.

Baoguang Temple is the symbol of Xindu District. The ticket price is 5 yuan. It houses the iconic leaning tower and a large Arhat Hall.

By Freelancer |

The five hundred Arhat statues in the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats each have unique expressions, a rare sight in Sichuan and perhaps even the country. The vegetarian meals are excellent, as are the vegetarian dim sum.

By Qian Xiaomei |

Welcome to our temple, it is said to be very good for making money❤️

Premier Wen also visited here.

I especially recommend you to try the vegetarian restaurant inside.

Baoguang Temple has converged its light so deeply that few people can get a glimpse of its true nature.

Baoguang Temple is home to numerous cultural relics. Wandering through the temple, one can feel the millennia of history being condensed and magnified time and again by inscriptions, artifacts, and paintings. The past of this place seems to unfold before one's eyes, and everything is so vivid. It is truly an indescribable experience.

Baoguang Temple, located in Xindu County, is a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Site and one of the "Four Great Buddhist Monasteries" of southern China. It is recognized as the oldest, largest, and most culturally rich Buddhist temple in Chengdu, attracting over a million visitors annually. Originally built in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Baoguang Temple weathered wars and underwent several reconstructions before reaching its present-day splendor. Legend has it that Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty, fleeing to Sichuan following the Huang Chao Uprising, witnessed an auspicious light emanating from beneath the Fugan Pagoda within the temple at night. He subsequently unearthed a stone box containing 13 relics, and renamed the temple "Baoguang Temple." The relics were placed beneath the pagoda, which was renamed the "Wujiu Jingguan Relic Pagoda," also known as the Baoguang Pagoda. The pagoda leans slightly westward, earning it the nickname the "Leaning Pagoda of the East."

The largest temple in Chengdu Plain, well-preserved, close to Guihu Lake

By Silu Travel |

Chengdu Baoguang Temple is located in Xindu District, the Land of Abundance, outside the Third Ring Road, about a 25-minute drive from Chengdu city. It has a more peaceful feeling here and is a place where many believers in Buddhist culture and pursue their beliefs. There are many stalls selling incense outside Baoguang Temple, but it is recommended to ask the ticket office first whether you can bring it into the temple to avoid unnecessary waste.

A temple in Xindu, different from other temples in that it has five hundred Arhats

By Xiaojiao Godzilla |

The banyan tree inside is very big and you can go in and have vegetarian meals. Those who like Buddhist culture can visit it.

By Bai Xubo |

Located in Xindu District, it is a bit far from the city center. However, there is an Arhat Hall inside, which is known as one of the four major Arhat Halls in China. It has a field-shaped layout and houses 500 Arhats, which is very unique.

By Silent Mountain |

Chengdu, the Land of Abundance, is an ancient city with history and culture. It not only has beautiful scenery but also numerous places of interest and historical sites.

One of them is the thousand-year-old Baoguang Temple on Baoguang Road in Xindu District, Chengdu. The Baoguang Pagoda inside the temple is known as the "Leaning Tower of the East", comparable to the "Leaning Tower of Pisa".

By Go with the flow |

Nowadays, many large tourist temples are commercialized, and you can no longer feel their original tranquility! There are many plaques inscribed by Qing Dynasty emperors.

By dromobabel |

In Xindu, you can visit it together with Guihu Lake. It is said to be quite spiritual, but temples are all the same.

By Fuzzy |

It is a well-preserved temple in the vicinity of Chengdu. It is not far from the city center of Chengdu and has convenient transportation. It is very famous, especially the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats, which is well worth a visit.

By Gray and the Lonely Traveler |

With a 5 yuan ticket, you can see a lot of things, the environment is very good, and there are many birds.

By Chichi |

The environment is elegant and the courtyard is spacious. It is one of the best-managed temples in the south.

The arhat statues and pagodas are not the only things worth seeing, but also the ancestral pagoda forest, which is very quiet. If you are just looking for excitement, you don't need to go there.

I don't know if it's just people in Chengdu or Sichuan who like to spit everywhere, but it's really bad. It's disgusting to see this kind of behavior in a temple. And then there are those middle-aged and elderly women yelling and shouting in the temple halls, which is really annoying. It would be better if everyone had some manners when out and about.

I didn't deliberately choose the right angle for the photos, but I did capture some details. For example, the plaques and the furnishings are majestic and solemn. There are also some antique touches. For example, the lotus pots are beautiful and can be moved around for easy care. And the gentle breeze and fragrance are refreshing. It's clear that the caretakers are very attentive.

The temple's tranquility and solemnity give people a sense of belonging. We are all orphans of the Three Realms and Six Paths. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to manifest life in human form and even encounter the path of light.

Cultivate a pure mind and you will achieve all blessings.

Samaya~🙏🏽

I've been there twice, and each time was a different experience. It was raining the first time, which inevitably dampened my mood. The second time, I felt much more at peace. You need to buy a ticket to enter, which isn't expensive, only about 5 yuan. You must worship with a sincere heart, for your wishes to be granted. There's even a giant turtle inside, which is quite spiritual. A thousand-year-old temple always has its own unique charm. Consider going there for a vegetarian meal and some tea.

While in Xindu, you can also visit Guihu Park, where you can eat rabbit heads and buy osmanthus cakes and ginger candies.
