In 1992, scientists discovered the Dagu Glacier on a satellite.

Located at the northern end of the middle section of the Hengduan Mountains on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, at the junction of the Min Mountains and the Qionglai Mountains, it is a high mountain canyon area where the mountains on the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin transition to the plateau hills.

In August of the same year, scientists climbed the Dagu Glacier and conducted a week-long survey. They concluded that the Dagu Glacier is the lowest glacier in the world (5,100 meters above sea level), the largest in area, the youngest, and the closest to the city.

Dagu is a typical representative of small mountain glaciers. The 11 marine mountain glaciers in the area and the Xuebaoding Glacier constitute an extremely important glacier area at the easternmost edge of Asia. It is also the easternmost area of ​​China where marine glaciers are developed.

We encountered many monkeys, who were not afraid of people and played around without restraint.

It is said that this is a Tibetan macaque, which is a species unique to China and the largest species of the Chinese macaque genus. These monkeys live in rocky environments in mountain broad-leaved forests, and live in groups of a dozen or twenty or thirty, with 2-3 adult male monkeys as leaders in each group.

Dagu Glacier is located in Heishui County. As a popular scenic spot in recent years, the scenic area has alpine meadows, clear lakes, dense forests, magnificent snow-capped mountains, and a high view. When entering the scenic area, take a sightseeing bus up the mountain, stop at several viewing points to see the meadows and lakes, and finally reach the cable car. Then take the cable car directly to the highest point of 4,860 meters above sea level to get close to the glacier. It is recommended to reserve most of the day for the tour. The provincial road from Chengdu to Heishui County via Maoxian is really dangerous. The unfinished tunnel, the road surface that has become potholes due to rockfall and mudslides, and the dusty and unbuffered steep slopes, the last few dozen kilometers of this 6-hour drive almost burned out my and my friends' enthusiasm for travel. Tips for the scenic spot: It is recommended to buy a package ticket (ticket + round-trip sightseeing bus + round-trip cable car, official booking price is 370 yuan, travel agencies or Heishui County hotels may have preferential prices so you can pay attention in advance), make an appointment in advance on the official WeChat account, and you can buy tickets as early as 14 days in advance. You can enter the scenic spot directly with your ID card.

The sightseeing bus travels more than 30 kilometers, stopping at five or six scenic spots such as Jinhou Lake, Zenacuo, Red Army Bridge, Dagu Lake, etc., and finally reaches the lower station of the cableway (3,610 meters above sea level), and then takes the world's highest cableway directly to the top of the mountain (4,860 meters above sea level, if you are worried, it is best to prepare oxygen cylinders). The vertical height difference of the cableway is more than 1,200 meters, and the one-way trip takes about 15 minutes.

The scenic spots where the sightseeing bus stops are unremarkable. It still fits the saying - after Jiuzhaigou, you can't see water!

August is the worst time to visit Dagu Glacier! There is not much snow on the top of the mountain, and even the glacier is almost gone.

Not far from the mountaintop cable car station is an ice lake with large chunks of floating ice.

Lying quietly in the lake, faint blue light patterns can be seen through the cracks in the floating ice.

According to locals, in the early years, Dagu Glacier was the real glacier.

There was a thick wall of ice on the mountain, but unfortunately it seems to have melted away in the past few years.

In fact, the blue effect in the photo cannot be seen with the naked eye, so those who have been there in person may be disappointed.

There is a winding wooden walkway along the ice lake in the scenic area. It is covered with ice and snow all year round, which adds a cool feeling in the hot summer.

Tickets are 60 yuan, sightseeing buses are 70 yuan, and cable cars are 180 yuan. The sightseeing buses in the scenic area did not stop at the scenic spots marked on the tickets for tourists to visit. During the National Day holiday, there were quite a lot of tourists in the Dagu Glacier Scenic Area. Both the tour bus and the cable car had to queue up a little bit, and the cable car queued for about 1.5 hours. The beautiful scenery you saw after the comparison was worth it. The scenic area is actually very large. This is where the Red Army crossed the snow-capped mountains during the Long March. We passed the Red Army Bridge and the ancient Tibetan village, but because we were eager to see the ice and snow, we had no time to see other scenery. The bus took us straight to the top of the mountain. When we were queuing for the cable car at the top of the mountain, it snowed heavily, and the beautiful hexagonal snowflakes were very pleasing. From the entrance of the scenic area to the cable car station, I found that it was two different seasons. The leaves outside were still green, but here the forests were dyed with colors, with distinct layers, like a watercolor painting. I just regretted that my eyes were not enough. And I could only watch from the bus, and could not stay, which was a pity!

Like most scenic spots, you need to take a sightseeing bus to get into the scenic area after getting the ticket. Most scenic spots have gates built far away, so that they can collect an extra sightseeing bus fee and generate income for the local tourism industry.
