There are many places in Chengdu where you can watch Sichuan opera performances. There are Shufeng Yayun on Qintai Road and Furong Guocui at Jinjiang Theater. There are also a few small ones in Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli. But if you want to talk about authentic ones, Shufeng Yayun and Furong Guocui are the best.

Shufeng Yayun was once a century-old opera theater with ups and downs. It is located in the ancient building complex of Qingyang Palace on Qintai Ancient Path. The simple architectural style has the honest and leisurely spirit of Western Shu.

When you come to Chengdu, you must watch the Sichuan Opera face-changing performance. It is really amazing. Book tickets online in advance and choose seats. You can exchange tickets at the ticket exchange point on Qintai Road. The nearly two-hour performance is very exciting, with unique skills and funny moments. The old artists are very hard-working. It is really amazing for tourists. The theater staff will refill the tea cups from time to time. The service is very thoughtful. It tasted good, but it was not much different from the Tangyuan in Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

The show included folk music, puppet shows, short plays, lantern rolls, and of course, face-changing and fire-breathing. The most impressive part was the vivid hand-shadow show and the lantern rolls, which were both funny and comparable to acrobatics. The closing show, face-changing and fire-breathing, was also applauded by the whole audience. I was enjoying the show when a copper sword suddenly stabbed at me from the side, scaring me into a cold sweat. When I looked closely, I found that it was a copper teapot with a spout of about one meter long. The waiter was refilling the tea bowl from a distance, which was a bit of an old theater feature. I took some time to look around. The theater with hundreds of people was full, and the corridors on both sides were also very lively. This theater has the flavor of old Chengdu, with a courtyard environment. When watching the show, five people sit at a table on bamboo chairs and drink tea while watching the show. If you have time, you should go to a traditional opera house to watch a complete Sichuan opera. The Sichuan opera of more than ten minutes in places like Kuanzhai Alley or Jinli is really just a glimpse. You can't appreciate its charm, and even worse, it may destroy your little enthusiasm to understand it. We bought Class B tickets, and maybe because we arrived early, we were lucky to be arranged in the first row, behind the Class A area.

I bought a package with the Panda Base, which cost 150 yuan for about an hour and a half of performance. The Sichuan Opera performance was really substantial and exciting.

Shufeng Yayun is a Sichuan Opera actor club on Qintai Road, Qingyang District, Chengdu. The Sichuan Opera performances here are as famous as those in Shunxing Old Teahouse in the Convention and Exhibition Center, Shufeng Square in People's Park, and Jinjiang Sichuan Opera House, but it is closer to attractions such as Kuanzhai Alley and Qingyang Palace, so it is more recommended. I bought tickets for the evening Shu Feng Ya Yun performance at China-TravelNote Mall. I listened to the guide's advice and said that if you don't buy VIP, you should buy B-tickets. The service was very good. It was a bit cold when I went there. I could ask them for a coat to wear. I could also watch the actors put on makeup before the show. I could also pay to take opera photos. The only downside was that there were no subtitles, which was a bit hard to understand.

We chose the Shufeng Yayun Theater in the Cultural Park. The ticket office is opposite the park and the theater is on the right side of the park entrance. Before the performance, you can go backstage to watch the actors put on makeup, or you can experience it yourself. A thick layer of white powder is applied on the face, eyebrows are drawn with ink, exaggerated blush and eye shadow are applied, hair pieces are attached, and heavy hair accessories are worn, and the image of the stage characters comes to life.

The performance began. The first play was "The Generals of the Yang Family". I, who usually don't like to listen to opera, found it very nice. Then there were performances of Gaohu, Suona, sand painting, and puppetry. But I personally prefer "Rolling Lantern", a clown play that combines skills with humor, which made the audience laugh continuously. Of course, the most amazing thing was the Sichuan Opera face-changing. The rapid rhythm changes drew applause from the audience. The actors even went off the stage in person to let the audience in the backstage feel the shock of art up close.

Before I went there, I was looking forward to the face-changing drama of Shufeng Yayun. I didn't expect that I had to appear last because of the makeup. The other classic performances were also unstoppable. I also experienced the puppetry and shadow puppetry there, which was very fun.

It is a very recommended place to visit when you go to Chengdu. The tickets for the performances are not expensive, and they represent some of the local Sichuan opera styles.

It is recommended to buy tickets from online platforms such as China-TravelNote and Taobao, which are much cheaper than on-site (almost half price). When redeeming tickets on site, you need to tell the staff the booking platform and name. The service attitude is very good and fast. The advantage of buying tickets on site is that you can choose seats, so it is recommended to order as early as possible online, so that the position is still good. Regarding the ballot, it is recommended that if you want to guarantee the effect, VIP is of course the best. The online price is generally around 190 yuan/person. However, in fact, the entire garden is not very large, and the performance will be interactive, and the face will change and go off the stage, so if you don’t buy VIP tickets, the most recommended is the front row of the B ticket, the online price is 110, and the cost performance is the best. Because the 140 yuan A ticket is too close to the VIP, the view will be blocked. If you sit on the side, the effect will be worse. If you can do the first row in the middle of the B ticket, that’s the best! The A-class ticket is not recommended because it will be very good if you are in the middle, but if you are unfortunately on the side, the view will be very bad. As for the 70 yuan C ticket, it is not recommended because the position is too far back.

About the performance:

The show officially starts at 8:00, but it is strongly recommended to arrive at 7:00! The reasons are as follows:

1. Arrive early. You can enter the park after 7 o'clock. This makes it convenient to visit and take pictures. You can watch the performance carefully when it starts. However, I personally watched it twice. The first time I just took pictures. A year later, I went to Chengdu and couldn't help but watch it again.

2. If you enter in advance, you can watch the actors putting on makeup backstage and experience the makeup process yourself. It is quite nice to see the birth of beautiful makeup.

3. If you arrive earlier to redeem your ticket, you may get a better seat.

4. If you come to Chengdu in summer, there will be a lot of mosquitoes because the performance is outdoors, but the theater provides floral water and fans (so the smell here is full of floral water in summer). The ticket price includes a special snack or doll experience and covered tea.

In the evening, we booked a performance of Shufeng Yayun, which is located on Qintai Road, very close to Qingyang Palace. It is within walking distance to the Sichuan Opera Actors Guild Hall, which used to be a gathering place for famous actors. In recent years, it has reunited famous actors in Sichuan and launched a "classic opera and folk art performance" every night.

The ticket price should have increased. I booked online and paid extra for the seat selection, which turned out to be worth it. I sat in the second row and could watch the show up close.

Fengyayun is called a theater, but it is actually a stage set up under a canopy in a large courtyard. It may not be the largest or most grand in Chengdu, but it should be the most authentic Sichuan opera venue. The audience sits on bamboo chairs to watch the performances of the artists, and there are free tea bowls and peanuts, which is both down-to-earth and friendly.

The ticket price also includes the opportunity to try on the Hanfu and visit the backstage. It's a great opportunity. You must try it. The whole performance was very exciting and dazzled me.

Shufeng Yayun Theater is located on Qintai Road in Chengdu. As soon as you exit the subway, there is a very obvious archway of Qintai Ancient Path. Just keep walking inside and you will find Shufeng Yayun Theater. The tickets for Shufeng Yayun are also purchased online together with the tickets for the Panda Base. You can go directly to the Shufeng Yayun lobby to exchange your tickets. There is usually a performance from 20:00 to 21:30, and there are additional performances on holidays from 18:00 to 19:30. There are two performances in total. We booked the ticket for the 20:00 show. There are many Sichuan Opera costumes, accessories and props in the Shufeng Yayun lobby for viewing and purchase, which are very exquisite and gorgeous.

The inn we stayed in offered a service for buying tickets for the [Shu Feng Ya Yun] performance. We chose the most expensive tier, the original price for VIP was 320 yuan, but it was 190 yuan when we bought it at the inn. In the end, we were seated in the third row when we picked up the tickets on site, which was okay. The front row will probably be reserved for those who bought the tickets on site at the original price.

VIP tickets come with a choice of four services (back massage, ear cleaning, wearing costumes, and makeup). We chose the back massage, which was quite good and took about five minutes.

While watching the performance, you can order some Sichuan snacks, including glutinous rice balls, long shou, etc.



Many of the visitors are tour groups and foreigners.

As a Chengdu native, I have passed by here countless times and was attracted by a pair of peculiarly shaped unicorns at the door, but I have never stepped into it, let alone knowing that it is a theater until I went to see a performance not long ago. Shufeng Yayun Theater has several different performance venues, some of which are dedicated to Sichuan opera performances, and some are dedicated to traditional folk stunts. We watched "shadow play", the ticket price was 80 yuan/person, and it was cheaper to book online for 58 yuan/person, but we booked it on the weekend, and it would be cheaper if it was not a weekend, 38 yuan/person. The performers are Shen Xiao, Xiang Xiaoying and his team, the famous Sichuan hand shadow artist, including the traditional glove puppet show "Brothers Fighting Tigers", and the hand movie that combines traditional art images such as hand shadow, shadow play, and string puppets. You can feel the strong atmosphere of Chengdu from it, and there is a sense of montage. The performance environment is also good. This theater is on the second floor. It is not particularly large, but it is very delicate, with the feeling of a traditional old theater. There are no rows of seats, but instead square tables. Only four people can sit at a table. The ticket also includes covered tea bowls. The tea is really good. You can choose jasmine tea and green tea. The tea leaves are individually packaged and brewed immediately after opening. It is really good. After brewing several times, it is still very similar. Each table is also served with some snacks such as peanuts and peas. Drinking tea, eating snacks and watching performances at the same time, life in Chengdu is so comfortable~~~The theater also displays many shadow puppets, glove puppets, and marionettes.
