Wenshu Monastery

文殊院

Wenshu Monastery is a key Buddhist temple in the Han area announced by the State Council. It is known as one of the four major Zen temples in the Yangtze River Basin. Located in the central area of Chengdu, it is a Buddhist holy place that integrates Zen temple holy sites, ancient gardens and buildings, pilgrimage sightseeing, and religious study.

The temple was first built during the Sui Dynasty (605-617) and was originally named Xinxiangyuan. It had a great influence in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. According to the "Famous Places", the "Inscription on the Construction of Luocheng" written by Hanlin Wang Hui, which recorded the reconstruction of Chengdu city wall by Luo Pian, the governor of Jiannan West Sichuan, was engraved in the temple. Huang Quan, a famous court painter in the Five Dynasties, once painted bamboo in the temple. Later, the prefect of Chengdu, Yuan Shuoyou, wrote a poem to record this event. In the Song Dynasty, Xinxiang Zongxian and Jiexiu Zen Masters preached Buddhism, and literati and scholars often visited here. There are poems such as "Inscription on Xinxiangyuan Mo'an" by Song Qi, a writer of the Northern Song Dynasty, "Xinxiangyuan Huideng" by Fan Zhen, a writer of the Northern Song Dynasty, and "Xinxiangyuan Water Pavilion" by Feng Shixing, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. It was destroyed by war in the late Ming Dynasty.

In the 36th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1697), the temple was rebuilt by Master Ci Du Hai Yue. At first, Master Ci Du built a hut on a deserted site and practiced Buddhism. At that time, people often saw fire shining in the sky at night. They followed the traces to find the place where Master Ci Du practiced Buddhism. They believed that it was the incarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva, so they were supported by officials and gentry. The temple was rebuilt and renamed Manjusri Temple. Emperor Kangxi once gave the temple calligraphy such as "Kong Lin". Prince Guo once visited the temple to worship Buddha and write poems. The temple's Dharma feast was very prosperous.

In the early years of the Republic of China, when the nation was in danger, the monks Defeng and Chan'an of the temple responded to the changing times and established institutions such as Konglin Charity Pharmacy and Wenshu Purun Higher School to serve the society and the people. During the Anti-Japanese War, all the monks of the temple and the teachers and students of Konglin Buddhist College located in the temple issued an anti-Japanese declaration, held a training class for the Sangha Rescue Team in the temple, organized the monks to commemorate the fallen soldiers, and actively participated in the anti-Japanese and national salvation movement. They also protected progressive students to secretly establish the earliest youth organization in Sichuan in the temple.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, with the attention and care of the Party and the government, Monk Kuanlin led the monks to embark on the road of self-reliance and innovation, and the temple was protected and repaired. Party and state leaders Deng Xiaoping, Zhu De, Chen Yi, Luo Ruiqing, Guo Moruo, Liao Chengzhi, Liu Lantao, Ba Jin, Zhao Puchu, Jia Qinglin, Liu Yandong, Xu Qiliang, You Quan, Wang Wenyuan, Wang Zhizhen, Qi Xuchun and others visited the temple and inspected it, which greatly encouraged the monks of the temple. It also received foreign dignitaries such as Australian Governor-General Hayden, King William Alexander of the Netherlands, and King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, playing a special role in foreign exchanges.

The current abbot of the temple is Master Zongxing, and there are about 80 resident monks. In recent years, the monks of the temple have carried forward the fine tradition of loving the country and religion, supported the leadership of the Communist Party of China, supported the socialist system, and continuously promoted the in-depth and practical implementation of the sinicization of Buddhism. The temple adheres to the study and practice system of morning and evening recitation, fasting in the hall, half-month Buddhist Lent, winter meditation and summer study all year round, and fully implements strict management of religion. There is no admission fee and free civilized incense all year round. Activities such as sermons, Dharma teaching, and meditation experience are organized to provide religious services for believers. Carry forward the Buddhist spirit of compassion and saving the world, widely carry out public welfare and charity such as helping the poor, disaster relief, respecting the elderly and loving the young, and actively fulfill social responsibilities.

The temple covers an area of about 90 mu and has a construction area of about 20,000 square meters. The ancient buildings of the temple are scattered and arranged in an orderly manner. The six main halls are arranged in sequence on the central axis, which is magnificent and majestic. The hollow window grilles of each hall are various and exquisite, which can be called the best in domestic Buddhist temples. The temple houses tens of thousands of Buddhist statues, instruments, ancient books, calligraphy and paintings, including many handed down masterpieces. The iron-cast statue of the god of commandments from the Song Dynasty, the silk-painted "Ink Dragon" by Han Song, and the thread-embroidered "Diamond Sutra" are exquisite in art; the collection of the Ming Dynasty handwritten sutra "Collection of Mahayana Sutras and Mantras", the Qing Dynasty embroidered Manjusri statue, the hair-embroidered Guanyin statue, and the blood-written "Avatamsaka Sutra" are particularly special; the calligraphy and paintings of famous masters such as Emperor Kangxi, Prince Guo, Liu Yong, Huang Shen, Guo Moruo, Zhang Daqian, Yu Youren, Xie Wuliang, Feng Zikai, Zhao Puchu, and Qi Gong are extremely precious. The Buddha's bone relics and Master Xuanzang's skull relics enshrined in the temple are particularly revered by the world.

When you enter the thousand-year-old Wenshu Temple, you will not only be shocked by its profound historical and cultural heritage, but also feel its vitality in the new historical period.

Wenshu Temple is located in Wenshufang, Qingyang District, Chengdu. For me, it is a place that I must recommend. Unlike Jinli Kuanzhai, there will be a large number of tourists here, and the quietness of Wenshufang is preserved, which adds to its historical weight.

I prefer to come here in the warm afternoon to see the shadows cast by the setting sun on the red wall. It may be because I can't get up in the morning, but there are free explanations in Wenshu Temple in the afternoon. You can also get three free incense sticks, burn the incense, make a wish, and then line up to touch the "Fu". Remember: "Fu" must be touched with your eyes closed! This is the visiting process of Wenshu Temple that most people in Chengdu know.

Wenshu Monastery is very large. We often only walked around its main building. In fact, there is a large area behind it, which is even more peaceful. In the bustling city, in the mottled shadows of bamboo, you can find a piece of heaven and earth, quiet and lonely. . .

Wenshu Temple was not a stop on my original Chengdu trip plan, but I just happened to be looking for food nearby, so I decided to take it easy and go in for a walk.

▪︎Transportation: Wenshuyuan Station on Metro Line 1

▪︎Tickets: Free

Since I didn't come during the Chinese New Year, there weren't many people. I walked around the temple as a tourist and saw many devout people burning incense on the way. It is said that Wenshu Temple is very effective in praying for peace and academic success.

Wenshu Temple is one of the landmark attractions in Chengdu and is also a Buddhist place. Its quiet atmosphere is in stark contrast to the bustling commercial street opposite.

The ancient garden buildings inside should have been repaired and refurbished. There are many green plants and pavilions, and the overall environment is still good.

When talking about Wenshu Temple, I wonder if people think more of the vermilion walls or the delicious food near Wenshu Temple?

Wenshu Monastery was the only attraction I wanted to visit in downtown Chengdu this time. Not only for the red walls, but also for the food.

I went back to Wenshu Monastery to take some photos of the red wall. Although the red wall can be seen everywhere, I don't know how long I took photos in front of the red wall in Nanjing's Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. The main gate of Wenshu Monastery was closed, but you can still enter from a side door.

The quiet backyard, the flying eaves and the bells swaying in the wind, the many red candles lit in front of the incense burner, and the monks walking by in twos and threes chatting... ...the so-called leisurely and elegant mood of "not being surprised by praise or criticism, watching the flowers bloom and fall in the yard; not caring about staying or leaving, watching the clouds roll and unfold in the sky" is probably like this.

Chengdu Wenshu Temple is a holy place of Tibetan Buddhism. There are many believers, both men and women, who worship Buddha devoutly. The temple is free to visit and 3 Buddhist incense sticks are given away. It is really a holy place of Buddhism. Photography is not allowed in the temple, so I could only take some photos secretly. The temple enshrines Maitreya Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Sakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha..., but you need to worship Buddha in a civilized manner and worship Buddha devoutly.

On the central axis of the temple are five halls, namely the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Hall of Guanyin, the Main Hall, the Dharma Hall, and the Sutra Library. However, the most beautiful one is the Stele Forest Corridor next to the incense burner. There is a pair of stone tablets at the entrance. The corridor inside is beautifully decorated and creates a very atmospheric atmosphere when photographed.

This is a very ordinary eaves in the temple. After taking the photo, there is no need for post-production color adjustment. The carving technique and shape alone make people feel extremely beautiful.

This is a natural photo spot for photography enthusiasts. If a beautiful woman in ancient costume walks by at this time and you snap her smile, it will be a great photo.

Wenshu Temple provides three incense sticks for free to pilgrims. After burning the incense, worshiping Buddha, making a wish, and then having a bowl of vegetarian food, this is the enjoyable travel process of Wenshu Temple.

Finally, I came over to Mo Mo's dragon head stick. Although it is no longer used to ring the bell, it can still bring me some blessings.

As a temple lover (not a Buddhist but likes to visit temples), Wenshu Temple is really my favorite place. Maybe I was in a particularly good mood at the time, and I felt more comfortable than in Jiming Temple and Lingyin Temple. No entrance fee, free incense. A gentle girl handed me a cup of scented tea as soon as I entered the door, and then there were staff members explaining the history of Wenshu Temple for free. My husband and I stood beside and listened to the lecture arm in arm. After offering incense, we walked around and sat in the pavilion for a while. I felt peaceful and comfortable. I was handed scented tea before leaving, which made me happy.

I came to Wenshu Temple purely because the hotel was nearby. There were not many tourists here, but there were many devout Buddhists. I could overhear many interesting stories nearby. When I entered Wenshu Temple, I could feel the heritage of Bashu history. The red walls and green tiles, as well as the beautiful ginkgo trees, were very beautiful. I recommend coming here in December. The ginkgo trees add a touch of color to the winter.

Wenshu Monastery is a place that I would like to recommend. It is not as famous as Wuhou Temple, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Kuanzhai Alley and other places. Because of this, there are no large number of tourist groups coming here. Instead, it is a place where you can take some good photos.

The red wall and bamboo shadows of the Wuhou Temple are very famous, but the red wall and tree shadows I found in Wenshu Temple have their own unique charm.

Perhaps it is especially suitable to come here in the afternoon, when the setting sun casts the shadows of the ancient trees and stone sculptures on the quaint red walls of Wenshu Temple.

As a place with such oriental charm, it is no wonder that Wenshu Temple has become a famous place for local Hanfu enthusiasts in Chengdu to make appointments for photo shoots.

Get three free incense sticks, make a wish after burning the incense, and then line up to touch the "blessing". This is the process of visiting Wenshu Temple that most people in Chengdu know. Unlike some temples that charge high ticket prices and burn high-priced incense, Wenshu Temple is not mainly for making money. This is what a temple looks like in my mind.

Wenshu Temple is the best-preserved temple I have ever seen. It is made entirely of wood, unlike many temples that have been renovated or rebuilt not long ago. It looks majestic but lacks any sense of history. Perhaps this is why many people are willing to come to Wenshu Temple. This is one of the reasons why I love it.

Regardless of spring, summer, autumn or winter, the old people always gather under the pavilion of Wenshu Temple, reading newspapers and talking about the latest interesting things. As old neighbors for decades, they often understand each other as soon as you say something.

The quiet and leisurely Wenshu Temple not only attracts the elderly, but also many Chengdu people like to come here with their families on weekends. Even many foreigners come here because of its reputation.

Wenshu Temple has always been highly regarded by Chengdu people. Why? The Manjusri Bodhisattva enshrined in the temple is the god of wisdom. Many people say that this temple is very effective, especially for those who pray for children and high school entrance exams. Therefore, it has always been very popular.

Turning to the back of Wenshu Monastery, it is much quieter than the previous few spaces. Most of the pilgrims are concentrated in the front, while the back is a mysterious place.

The sunlight came through the window, casting mottled colors, and my mood at that time was very peaceful.

Each tourist spot in Chengdu is different, but there are places to drink tea everywhere. There is also a tea place next to Wenshu Temple. A bowl of tea costs 15 yuan, and peanuts and melon seeds are available by paying coins. Of course, you can also bring your own food. It is up to you to sit there as long as you want. If the weather is good, many Chengdu people will come early in the morning, burn incense at Wenshu Temple, and then come here to drink tea. At noon, they will have a meal nearby, and continue to drink tea in the afternoon.

It was a great feeling to walk through the red wall from the Wenshu Monastery Archway. Many people started taking photos from this place. Because the weather was so good on the day we went there, it was said that there was no such sunny weather in a month. Almost everyone in the city came out to enjoy the autumn. Many locals were seen in Wenshu Monastery. The red wall at the entrance became a popular photo spot because of the light and shadow. Everyone rushed to take photos of the red wall and the shadow.

In Wenshu Monastery, there are free explanations at different times every day. You can follow the volunteer guides to listen to the story of Wenshu Monastery. We came late and only heard a short story about the Zangjin Pavilion. But it was still very exciting.

By Cat Thoughts |

Wenshu Temple opened at 9:00, and I caught up with the first batch of guests. Except for the old people who were doing Tai Chi in the morning, they were all devout believers, and there was very little noise. This kind of quietness finally made it look like a temple, away from the hustle and bustle.

People seldom take photos in Wenshu Temple, mainly because they are afraid of being disrespectful to the Buddha. In the innermost part, believers and monks are doing morning prayers and chanting Buddhist scriptures.

By Arisaema curcumae |

The architecture of Wenshu Temple is solemn and simple. The ancient pines in the courtyard have been integrated with this place. Under the sunshine, they cast mottled shadows, adding a touch of Buddha nature. This place is very large. Like Daci Temple, it does not charge admission. It is really suitable for quiet experience here. Whether it is to feel the charm of religious beliefs or to feel the historical solemnity of the architecture, it is worth coming here.

Wenshu Temple has beautiful scenery, with evergreen camphor trees all over the garden. Walking among them, stopping as you go, what you see is where your heart is, making you feel relaxed and happy, and very comfortable.

Even if you don't believe in Buddhism, you should come here for a walk and take a look at the buildings. The entire building complex of Wenshu Temple faces north and south, in a typical Qing Dynasty style. The building is a pure wooden structure. The five halls are the Hall of Heavenly Kings, three earth halls, the Main Hall, the Dharma Hall and the Sutra Library. They are arranged along the central axis and opposite the central axis of the mountain gate. There are bell towers, Buddhist halls, Zen rooms and other buildings on both sides. The halls are connected by long corridors, which are integrated into one, magnificent, and more ancient and spacious.

Every day, countless people come here to burn incense and worship Buddha. What is touching is that there is no entrance fee here, and each person will be given three incense sticks, which can be collected for free on the right side of the entrance.

You know, many temples nowadays charge fifty or sixty yuan for tickets and thousands of yuan for incense. They have too much commercial atmosphere. Compared with this, Wenshu Temple is very conscientious. It is a pure place of Buddhism!

At the exit, you can see a stele gallery, which collects numerous steles from different dynasties since the Qing Dynasty. There are precious manuscripts of royal officials, some valuable original works inherited from famous calligraphers and painters of all dynasties, original works of masters in Wenshu Temple of all dynasties, and ink marks left by some famous calligraphers, etc. The number of stone inscriptions is breathtaking.

There are some delicious special foods on the street in front of Wenshu Temple. Be sure to try them next time you come here.

I feel that this place is suitable for people who want to worship Buddha, relax and appreciate culture. The temple also provides free incense, mainly for Manjusri Bodhisattva. There is a big ginkgo tree outside the entrance, and behind it are the Great Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, and the Guanyin Hall. There are more than 300 Buddha statues enshrined in the temple. You must not take pictures of Buddha statues here, so basically all the photos are mainly buildings. The temple is very quiet. The incense in the temple is also good. Compared with the temples with high tickets, there is no trace of money here, and there are many locals coming here. On the east side of the temple area is the cultural relics display area, which is also on the south side of the corridor. You can appreciate the inscriptions and calligraphy. Many of them are authentic works left by celebrities and writers. There are also many delicious snacks outside Wenshu Temple.

Wenshu Monastery is located in the center of Chengdu, the Land of Abundance, covering an area of more than 90 acres. It is a famous Buddhist temple in Sichuan, a key Buddhist activity venue in the country, one of the four major practice sites of Chinese Zen Buddhism, and a provincial cultural relic protection unit.

Its predecessor was the Miaoyuan Pagoda Courtyard in the Tang Dynasty, and was renamed "Xinxiang Temple" in the Song Dynasty. It was later destroyed by war. According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, Zen Master Ci Du built a hut in the ruins and meditated, chanting scriptures, and a red light appeared in his meditation. The government sent people to investigate and saw a statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva in the red light. Therefore, in the 36th year of Emperor Kangxi (1697), funds were raised to rebuild the temple, which was named Wenshu Temple. During the reigns of Emperors Jiaqing and Daoguang, the abbot of Wenshu Temple, Master Benyuan, purchased 82 stone pillars, rebuilt and expanded the main halls, and formed the current scale.

Wenshu Temple is large in scale, housing the skull relic of Xuanzang and the imperial calligraphy of Emperor Kangxi. It is the first Buddhist temple in Chengdu. The garden is full of greenery, complementing the red walls. The last major hall, Wenshu Pavilion, is majestic, highlighting the status of the temple.

Wenshu Temple is free to enter!!! I always have a fondness for free things.

Located in Qingyang District, it was first built in the Sui Dynasty and was rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Kangxi and was named Wenshu Monastery.

In addition to the free food, the surrounding food is another factor that attracts me to Wenshu Temple. Dongzikou Zhang Laoer Liangfen Wensu Garden and Palace Pastry Shop are all nearby.

I discovered Wenshu Temple by chance while walking on the street. I first saw a gorgeous memorial archway with a fat monk sitting under it. I took a photo of him and talked to him. I learned that there is a temple here called Wenshu Temple, which is very famous. I had never heard of it in Chengdu. Wenshu Temple was first built in the Sui Dynasty. It was rebuilt in the 36th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign. The temple introduction states that it is "a Buddhist holy place that integrates Zen temple holy sites, ancient gardens, pilgrimage sightseeing, and religious learning." It looks quite large.

From the outside, the crowds are bustling, and there are all kinds of snack bars and teahouses, with a strong sense of fireworks, and there is no sense of solemnity. I entered and found that the Sichuan Buddhist Association is here, and there is also a Buddhist college. Wenshu Temple has five halls, standard temple layout, Wenshu Pavilion has three eaves, and the window decoration is simple and beautiful. The main hall is magnificent, all with two wings and flying eaves, which is very Sichuan ancient building style. The Heavenly King Hall, the Dharma Hall, the Sutra Library, the bell and drum towers on both sides, the vegetarian hall, the Sutra Chanting Hall, etc. are all available. Are these all buildings during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty? I saw a tower called the Thousand Buddha Pagoda. This must be a modern building. There are traces of concrete. It must have been built after the reform and opening up. There is an inscription by Zhao Puchu. The pagoda is quite exquisite.

It is said that Wenshu Monastery has many cultural relics. Tang Xuanzang was ordained in Chengdu. He had three skulls, one of which is in Wenshu Monastery. In addition, there are hair embroidery and robes, cutting one's own hair to embroider Guanyin statues; tongue blood scriptures, piercing the tongue and dipping blood to copy scriptures, etc., which sound shocking. It must be real, but I didn't see it, which is a pity. Emperor Kangxi personally wrote the two words "Empty Forest", and I saw it. The Buddha statues are all painted, with Manjusri and Samantabhadra standing on both sides, and the two big words "Empty Forest" in the center. Buddhism says that the four elements are empty, and all things in the world are either there or not, and nothing is not nothing, which depends on "fate", and the temples in the mountains are called "jungles", and "Empty Forest" probably means the Buddhist world. In short, these things are quite complicated in the Buddhist scriptures.

A small ancient building complex.

I didn't find the entrance, or it was closed (probably because it was too late). So I didn't go in. I just walked around. It happened to rain that day, so there were very few people and many shops were closed. The area is an older residential area, and it was raining, so it felt a bit gloomy overall.

There are a few larger shops on the main road, and the rest are small shops.

Wenshu Monastery is located in Qingyang District, Chengdu, within the First Ring Road. It is a national key Buddhist temple in the Han area and a key cultural relic protection unit in Sichuan Province. It is now the headquarters of the Sichuan Provincial and Chengdu Buddhist Associations. It is a famous Buddhist temple in western Sichuan. Wenshu Monastery was first built during the Sui Dynasty (605-617). King Yang Xiu of Shu named it Xinxiang Temple after the "holy nun". In the fifth year of Huichang (845), Emperor Wuzong of Tang Dynasty destroyed Buddhism and the temple was destroyed. It was restored when Emperor Xuanzong ascended the throne (847) and has coexisted with the world for more than 800 years. It was completely destroyed in the first year of Shunzhi (1644) of the Qing Dynasty. Legend has it that in the Qing Dynasty, someone saw a red light appear at night. The government sent people to investigate and saw the image of Manjusri Bodhisattva in the red light. Therefore, in the 36th year of Emperor Kangxi (1697), funds were raised to rebuild the temple and renamed it Wenshu Monastery. Emperor Kangxi wrote the two words "Konglin" and bestowed the imperial seal "Chici Konglin". Emperor Kangxi's calligraphy is still preserved in the temple. Wenshu Temple covers an area of 82 acres and has more than 190 halls and houses.

Wenshu Monastery faces south and has a construction area of 11,600 square meters. Opposite the gate of the temple is a magnificent screen wall. The three characters "Wenshu Monastery" engraved on the wall were written by the Zen Master Ci Du Hai Yue of the monastery during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. It is said that this Zen master is the incarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva and has a profound practice. The five halls in the monastery, namely the Heavenly King Hall, the Three Great Bodhisattvas Hall, the Great Hall, the Dharma Hall, and the Sutra Library, are connected in sequence. They are integrated with the bell tower, dining hall, corridors and other buildings on the east and west sides. They are solemn, simple and spacious, and are typical Qing Dynasty buildings. On both sides are the Zen, Guan, Guest, Fasting, Precepts and Chanting Halls, and the Office Room, forming a closed quadrangle. The three-eave bell and drum towers facing each other have a bronze bell weighing more than 4,500 kilograms hanging in the bell tower. The statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva is cast in bronze and can be called a fine sculpture. The statue of the guardian deity Skanda was cast in bronze by the seventh abbot Benyuan in the ninth year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1829). It is finely crafted and has a childlike demeanor, reflecting the "appearance of a boy and the majesty of a general". There is also a Burmese jade Buddha listed as one of the "Eight Views of Konglin". It was brought back by the monk Xinglin in Burma in the 11th year of the Republic of China (1922) after going through hardships and collecting alms on foot. In addition, there are more than 300 Buddha statues of various sizes in the temple, whether they are stone carvings, copper and iron castings, or wood carvings and clay sculptures, all of which have cultural and artistic value.

Wenshu Monastery also houses many precious cultural relics and tens of thousands of Buddhist scriptures and documents, such as the "Tongue Blood Sutra" written by monk Xianzong and three others who pricked their tongues to draw blood; the Thousand Buddhas embroidered by Concubine Tian of Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty; and the Water Moon Guanyin embroidered by the eldest daughter of Yang Yuchun of the Qing Dynasty with her own hair. The parietal bones of Tang Monk Xuanzang collected in the monastery are particularly precious; in 1942, three parietal bones of Tang Monk were discovered in Nanjing, one was kept in Nanjing, one was sent to Xi'an, and one was sent to Chengdu because Chengdu was the place where Tang Monk received ordination.

After liberation, the courtyard was repaired and painted many times, and thousands of ginkgo, camphor, plum, magnolia and other flowers and trees were planted. A teahouse and a unique vegetarian restaurant "Xiangzhaitang" were added, making it a very popular Buddhist and tourist place.

Wenshu Monastery ~ This is my second visit. For me, temples are a place to relax. Whenever I feel upset, I want to go for a walk. However, there are few temples in inland China. Wenshu Monastery is a place I want to visit again. The temple is quiet, and believers worship Buddha devoutly, telling the gods and Buddhas what they wish for, which comforts the body and mind. Looking at the ancient artifacts and towering trees in the temple is really relaxing.

It is open to the public free of charge, which is somewhat different from ordinary Buddhist temples.

A temple with a long history in Chengdu. It is well-renovated and shaded by trees. There are many snacks and teahouses outside the door, which is suitable for leisure.

Because the tour guide recommended a delicious Guokui restaurant near Wenshuyuan subway station, I made a special trip there. There were quite a lot of people there, and the area was a bit messy, as if it wasn’t built as a tourist attraction. I didn’t eat the Guokui, but it was right after the subway exit, with a long queue. It looked pretty good, but it wasn’t the thin kind I wanted, it was the kind that Xi’an steamed buns with vegetables in them…

When I went there most frequently, I went there once a week. The autumn in Wenshu Temple was very beautiful. I felt very peaceful here. The Dongzikou Zhang Liangfen at the entrance is an old shop and tastes good.

The renovated Buddhist temple is a place where local Buddhists practice and hold religious activities.

When I went to Wenshu Monastery, I was first attracted by the ginkgo trees in front of the gate. The leaves were golden and beautiful. Many places are now inaccessible, and when you come here, it is best to listen to the explanations, otherwise you will not know what historical sites and allusions are inside. The nearby residents use this as a park, and the environment is good.

A place for outsiders to eat. But my husband and I prefer Wenshu Temple after comparing Jinli. Wenshu Temple is a place for worshiping Buddha. Those who want to convert to Buddhism can sign up. It is quieter. In my husband's words, it is not easy to find such a quiet place in such a location. It is said that Wenshu Temple requires tickets, so we may not have gone to the right place or we did not go to the real Wenshu Temple at all. Anyway, we did not need tickets, and it didn't matter because we came here for the food.

After the sun sets, there are few tourists in the temple

When you don't take too big steps, it's almost so quiet that you can hear the breathing of winter.

Three free incense sticks, no wish

Because it was dark, and out of a sense of awe, I didn't take too many photos.

I walked around quickly and came out

Wenshu Temple is not an old temple, but it has a grand temple with exquisite eaves and arches, which is more imposing than the temples in the north during the Qing Dynasty. There are many volunteers in the temple, who give tea and incense and maintain the environment. The temple is well-ordered, with a strong Buddhist atmosphere, quiet and lively, and worthy of being a national key temple.

Maybe it was because we arrived too late, and then, after we entered, we didn’t see anyone, and then, nothing happened.

I personally feel that every hall inside is very solemn. Even the most impetuous heart will be calmed down after worshipping in it, especially the saying "Always think about the past behind closed doors and don't talk about other people's faults when chatting" has an inspiring effect on many people. And the key is that there is no ticket, which is quite good.

By On the Road |

The temple is under construction and most of it is closed for construction. The library on the second floor of Wenshu Pavilion is worth reading frequently. There are many Buddhist books that are not available outside.

The teahouse next door is also very good, especially the self-service vegetarian hot pot is also quite fresh and delicious

An ancient temple. Since taking photos is not allowed in the temple, I took photos under the two beautiful ginkgo trees at the entrance of the temple. It was very beautiful.

Wenshu Monastery was first built during the Sui Dynasty (605-617). In the 36th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1697), funds were raised to rebuild the temple and it was renamed Wenshu Monastery. It is a Buddhist holy place that integrates Zen temples, ancient gardens, sightseeing, and religious learning.

I went there during the National Day holiday. There were too many people and I had to queue up to burn incense. The tower is very unique.

You can go there and if you are lucky you can see the chanting. My mother and I were lucky enough to hear it and it was great. Unfortunately we couldn't record it.

Chengdu Wenshu Monastery is a piece of pure land in the world. The ancient buildings and towering ginkgo trees are extremely beautiful.

Wenshu Temple is within the first ring road of Chengdu and can be easily reached by bicycle, with very convenient transportation.

Walking into the gate of the ancient temple, the red walls of the temple extend on both sides of the narrow road and follow you.

Slowly entering this historic temple, perhaps it is the inherent tranquility of the temple that makes you feel reverence. Stepping into the main gate of the temple, the architecture is seamlessly integrated, solemn, simple and spacious, with Zen, viewing, guest, fasting, precepts and Buddhist halls and service rooms on both sides. The halls are connected by long corridors and dense columns, forming an enclosed courtyard. All the houses are made of wood and stone. The column base stones are finely carved; the brackets on the columns are exquisitely carved.

By Backpacker's Notes |

Because Wenshu Temple is a national key temple in the Han area, it is very popular and often hosts various Buddhist activities. I took a bus to Wenshu Temple at around 9 o'clock in the morning and was stunned by the scene here. From the entrance of the temple to the inner hall, it was full of believers who came to burn incense. I didn't know what festival it was.

The scenery is great and the gardens are beautiful. There are many towering ancient trees and bonsai with unique shapes. The flowers, birds, fish and insects complement each other. It is quiet and beautiful.

There are many temples in Chengdu, among which the most famous one is Wenshu Temple. It is said that in ancient times, someone saw the appearance of Manjushri Bodhisattva, so the name Wenshu Temple was given.

The red wall outside the temple has also become a popular photo-taking spot for internet celebrities who come here to check in, and the tour of Wenshu Temple also starts from here.

In the early morning, a ray of warm sunlight shines on the red wall, penetrating the branches and leaves of the big trees that have grown here for decades, and casting shadows of different sizes of tree trunks and branches on the red wall. Choose a place without shadows, face the sun, let the sun shine on your face, and gently press the shutter, and a piece of art of light and shadow is created.

Life in Chengdu is slow, but time in Wenshu Monastery is even longer. Every flower and grass, pavilion and path in Wenshu Monastery seem to have returned to the past after time has crossed. Everything is so slow, with no hurried crowds, no noisy sounds, only the slowly rising incense and the faint Buddhist chants.

As you approach the temple, you can see the ancient and simple walls winding around the ancient temple. Three large characters "Manjusri Temple" are embedded on the main gate, which contrast with the words "Namo Amitabha", "Glorious Land, Benefit Sentient Beings", and "World Peace, Human Happiness" on the wall, making Manjusri Temple look very solemn and dignified.

Each hall and pavilion is simple and spacious, with flying eaves and pointed corners. The halls are clearly distinguished in importance and are staggered in an orderly manner with appropriate density. There are gardens in the courtyards, courtyards in the gardens, and scenery in the courtyards. The environment is extremely quiet and elegant.

Outside the wall, the world is bustling, while inside the wall, the sound of Buddhism is faint.

Although Wenshu Temple has a certain historical atmosphere, this makes it easier for us to understand the history of Chengdu and break down the original culture of this city.

When you are free or in a bad mood, you can go to Wenshu Temple for a stroll. Listen to the Buddhist chants, take a look at the gardens and greenery in the temple. Let go of all the past events in the world, calm down, and experience the world in every flower and bodhi in every leaf.

Wenshu Monastery is located in the northwest corner of Chengdu. It is a famous Buddhist temple in western Sichuan. Its predecessor was Miaoyuan Pagoda in the Tang Dynasty, and was renamed "Xinxiang Temple" in the Song Dynasty. It was later destroyed by war.

I went there late and there were a lot of people, mainly pilgrims, and then tourists who came after eating Zhang Laoer Liangfen. There are many verses on the corridor wall, you can understand them yourself. The forest on the left is very quiet, and the right is being renovated. The characteristic is the trouble consultation room, where the master will enlighten you.

Play time: 2-3 hours

With green trees, singing birds, fragrant flowers and lingering sounds of Zen, this is not only a holy place for practitioners, but also a leisure place for ordinary people living near the temple. I like the couplets here very much, they are very Zen.

By LuanNan |

It is quiet and popular. There are many tourists who come here because of its reputation. There are also many local believers. Everyone who comes here worships devoutly. It is very comfortable. Because I live nearby, this is my first stop when I come to Chengdu. It is not far from other attractions, so I ride a bike to play.

Wenshu Temple gave me an ordinary feeling. It is just a relatively large temple. Although it was a weekday, there were still many tourists in Wenshu Temple. When we went there, there seemed to be some kind of event. Citizens lined up in a long queue that stretched for hundreds of meters. I have always been afraid of queuing, so I didn't join in the fun.

By Meng Ke |

I went to Wenshu Temple just to buy puff pastry from Wensu Garden. Many people came to Wenshu Temple to pray for blessings. The temple was solemn and unexpectedly quiet and peaceful.

By Wang sleeps well |

Good men and women. Every time I see others kneeling with their hands together in piety, I always have some complicated emotions. I can't remember a few halls and Buddha statues, but there are a few words that are very impressive. It's the first time I saw "chicken soup" written in a temple. I stopped, thought, and gained. I wanted to walk around Wenshu Temple in a hurry and solve lunch separately. Looking at the time, it was almost noon. I caught a glimpse of the vegetarian restaurant in Wenshu Temple. Lunch is here! 30 yuan per person, simple and plain, very good.

By Selina |

Come here early in the morning to pray for blessings. It is a quiet place for Buddhism. There are many snacks nearby, and it is a slow life for leisure travel.

By Who is Helen? |

I went there today just in time for a sacrifice ceremony. There were a lot of people, and you could tell that many of them were locals. Locals also came to pray, and lined up for lunch in an orderly manner. It is said that the incense here is very popular, and I came here to make a wish and light a lamp for health and safety. There shouldn't be many people on weekdays. The jelly shop opposite the exit has a long line because their sweet noodles are really delicious, hahaha.

We arrived at Wenshu Temple at around five in the afternoon. There were very few people there. The wooden buildings showed a sense of age. There were a few ginkgo trees in the yard. The green leaves shone through the afterglow of the setting sun, giving a warm feeling. It will be even more beautiful in autumn when the sky is full of yellow leaves.

This place has a feeling of a quiet Buddhist place. At the same time, there is a retro street near Wenshu Temple, with teahouses, snacks, and Shu embroidery. It is highly recommended to go for a visit.

A Buddhist holy place, covering a large area with a beautiful environment... There are also many people drinking tea and chatting in the yard next to it. The surrounding area is simply a gathering place for delicious food, such as Zhong dumplings, Long Chao Shou, and the specially recommended sweet water noodles.

June 19th of the lunar calendar is the birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva, so today there are huge crowds of people and the queues are very long. . . . . . There are so many people lining up to burn incense and pray for blessings, wealth, and peace. Friendly reminder: There is a palace pastry shop on the left side of the Wenshuyuan archway, Zhang Laoer Liangfen at Dongzikou, and Yan Taipo Guokui.

People who have never been there may think that this is an old house or an old classroom for lectures. But in fact, it is a temple with a thousand-year history. It is now a key cultural relic protected by Sichuan Province, and of course it is also a tourist attraction in the hearts of tourists.

When I first saw Wenshu Temple, I felt it was a bit festive. The walls outside the gate were all red, almost the same as the Wuhou Temple. Even though I see it often, I still feel that such walls are very artistic.

There are many old trees inside. As for why they are called old trees, I have never asked. I just guessed that judging from their thick branches, they must not be young. Therefore, even if you come here in midsummer, you will not feel the heat unbearable. Instead, it will be particularly cool with the breeze.

The architecture of Wenshu Temple is very beautiful. It is a traditional Chinese temple building with white walls, dark green tiles, and red eaves. With the backdrop of green trees, it seems to be particularly attractive to tourists.

Although Wenshu Temple has gradually become a tourist attraction in the hearts of tourists, it does not charge admission to the public. In this respect, Wenshu Temple has done a very good job. After all, many famous temples in China now charge admission fees.

There are a lot of pilgrims here, and the incense is very strong. No matter it is a holiday or weekend, it is always like a cloud of mist. On the right hand side after entering the door, everyone can get a stick of incense for free. If you are willing to donate some incense money, this is optional and not a mandatory requirement.

There are five levels of halls in the temple, from the outside to the inside, including the Heavenly King Hall, the Three Earth Halls, the Great Hall, the Dharma Hall and the Sutra Library. On the east and west sides are the bell tower, the dining hall and the corridors. The overall look is solemn and dignified, simple and spacious. Because it was rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, the buildings here are still relatively typical of the Qing Dynasty.

In addition to ancient cedars and ginkgo trees, the park also has lotus flowers planted in ceramic pots. Perhaps they are just like their inner selves, rising above the mud without being stained, and still maintaining a pure heart in this complex society.

It is a closed courtyard with more than 190 houses. At certain times, religious courses are open to the public, which is a short experience of the life of a monk, copying scriptures, meditating, and eating vegetarian food. In fact, it is to calm your heart, understand yourself better, and not follow the crowd. Perhaps, in this fast-developing society, it is very necessary, at least I think so.

I guess many tourists don’t go to Wenshu Temple because its geographical location is not as good as Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley and Chunxi Road. It is just a temple, but I still came here.

Maybe my concept of travel is different from others. I don’t go to scenic spots just because they are scenic spots. I just go there because I think it is beautiful and fun and can make me remember it. Some places are not considered scenic spots, but I will go there. I like many corners of the city, which are the embodiment and elements of life. There are not so many people in the place, so I can be alone and calm down.

Wenshu Monastery in Chengdu was built during the Sui Dynasty. It is the first of the four major Zen temples in the upper and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This shows the status of Wenshu Monastery in Chinese Buddhist Zen temples. In summer, there are many green plants in the Zen temple, and there are many shaded areas. Walking under the shade of the Zen temple, the air seems a bit cool. Most of the people who come here are people who pray to gods and Buddhas. Most of them are elderly people, and there are also young couples who pray here.

Of course, at such a Buddhist holy place, there are some people at the door who will use faith to hijack morality. Some people at the door will pull you to buy their red cloth, saying that it is blessed and can bless you. If you don’t buy it, they will say something unpleasant. They will say that they are the incarnation of Bodhisattva. Although it is obviously a lie, people with faith can't help but pay for it.

If you really have faith, just burn incense and pray in the temple. People outside cannot be trusted. Entering from the gate, there is a large building called Wenshu Pavilion, where many contemporary cultural relics are stored.

The magnificent temple is hidden in the city. It does not charge admission and closes very early. I saw the monks in the temple playing table tennis.

There is an interesting couplet. At that time, I tried to make it short. This couplet is very famous in Chengdu.

I went to the ancient temple with my classmates in the early morning. Although the sun did not shine on the tall trees in Chengdu, I felt the feeling of white raindrops jumping into the boat. I really regretted not bringing a SLR camera. I could only take one or two photos with my mobile phone.

Wenshu Monastery is rather deserted, with many places still flooded and inaccessible. It is probably still under construction. There are many birds chirping. Is it quiet in a busy city? However, the tower and the forest of steles are still very representative.

Wenshu Temple is actually like a park. There is a tea place with many pigeons. Tea: 20/person

A very sacred and worthwhile attraction. No one here speaks loudly, there is only tranquility and peace of mind. Burning incense, praying for blessings, and listening to the masters chanting allow you to calm down and think. It is really good. The calligraphy on the wall is all written with heart!

Wenshu Temple is located in Qingyang District. It was first built in the Sui Dynasty and was rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. It is called Wenshu Temple. It has a profound cultural heritage and lacks the hustle and bustle of other temples. The transportation here is convenient. Take Metro Line 1, get off at Wenshu Temple, exit K, go straight to the entrance, turn left, and then turn left again. It is a few minutes away.

By Forest |

Wenshu Temple is really my favorite place to stay in Chengdu!

There are not many tourists here, and the environment is quiet. The pines and cypresses are verdant, and the wooden fish sounds. The green smoke lingers between the towers and the misty rain, and the solemn and simple buildings make people stop and savor. The Xiangyuan, separated from the temple by a wall, was originally the place where the lay Buddhists ate. Now it is open to the public and self-service. After eating too much Sichuan cuisine and hot pot, it is better to have a vegetarian meal and a cup of fragrant tea to clear your stomach and get rid of dryness. Listen to the daily life of the market, and let your little daze go. Amitabha~
