Yingxiu Earthquake Site

映秀地震遗址

Yingxiu Town was the epicenter and the hardest-hit area in the Wenchuan earthquake. Most of the houses in the town collapsed, and landslides occurred everywhere, causing water and power outages, and interruptions to communications and transportation.
The ruins mainly include a memorial hall introducing the earthquake and the earthquake ruins of Xuankou Middle School. The remains are simply reinforced supports for the originally destroyed buildings, and most scenes have retained their original state to the greatest extent possible.
At the intersection of Yingxiu Town, there stands a huge stone with the words "Yingxiu, the epicenter of the 5.12 earthquake" written on it. This huge stone rolled down from the mountain during the earthquake and has now become a landmark road sign of Yingxiu.

On February 13, 2019, at about 11 o'clock in the morning, I left the Luding Bridge Scenic Area and headed to Yingxiu in Wenchuan. I wanted to go there to see the 512 earthquake epicenter site.

From Luding Bridge to Yingxiu, the navigation shows 278 kilometers, which takes 3 and a half hours to drive. It seems that most of the route is expressway.

It wasn't very difficult, and I arrived at the Yingxiu 512 earthquake site in Yingxiu Town around 3:00 PM. Yes, it has been developed into a tourist attraction.

As a tourist attraction, the Yingxiu 512 earthquake epicenter site is equipped with parking lots, sightseeing electric vehicles and other facilities. Fortunately, there is no entrance fee, only a 20-yuan bus fare, which takes tourists directly to the gate of Xuankou Middle School, which is the best preserved.

The battery car ride took about 10 minutes, passing a small village whose main source of income was tourism. It was quite lively. Finally, I was dropped off in front of a square.

This square is obviously newly built in front of the ruins. It is a square where Communist Party members take the oath of joining the party.

Only by crossing this square and turning left can you reach the main entrance of the "Wenchuan Xuankou Middle School Earthquake Site".

Entering the school through the gate at the main entrance is a large open space. Opposite the open space is a clock-shaped sculpture commemorating the 512 earthquake. (I don’t know if this huge stone carved into a clock is a relic of the earthquake.) The five-star red flag is flying high on the ruins behind it.

Walk right from this square and follow the plank road of the scenic area for a circular tour route. Finally, you will turn back here from the left side of the square.

The first thing I saw was the dormitory building for junior high and high school:

The small hill of reinforced concrete below was once the high school dormitory for boys and girls. I'm not sure how many floors it had, but after the earthquake, it became like this.

I was deeply distressed when I saw this, and thought: If there were students, teachers, and staff members in there at the time, would any of them have survived?

In August 2008, the world-renowned Olympic Games concluded successfully in Beijing. The overwhelming joy seemed to overshadow the immense sorrow of three months prior. Perhaps only the families of the deceased will never forget it.

I left Yingxiu quickly because I felt extremely cold.

Leaving the gloomy Chengdu, the first place I arrived at was Yingxiu, Wenchuan. Ten years ago, this seemingly unknown town suddenly became world-renowned. Located at the epicenter of the earthquake, the town was almost completely destroyed, resulting in countless casualties. It was arguably the most devastating disaster of this century. Ten years later, rows of sturdy, neatly built houses have been built next to the former earthquake site, and the streets, rich in Tibetan and Qiang culture, are lined with restaurants, hotels, and shops.

Today, Yingxiu Town has been rebuilt and transformed into a tourist attraction - built on a disaster.

In front of the guide map, a small group of 6 or 7 people, led by a tour guide, handed it over to the guide in the scenic area. The tour guide told several tourists that this girl (the guide) was a local who had experienced the earthquake and was "authentic."

A dish.

A show.

Authentic.

Fuck your "original flavor".

The Yingxiu Earthquake Site, an AAAA-rated scenic spot located at the southern gate of Aba Prefecture, 78 kilometers from Chengdu, serves as a vital transportation route for those entering or leaving Jiuzhaigou, Wolong, and Siguniang Mountain. On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province. Several strong aftershocks followed in the following days. Yingxiu Town was the epicenter and hardest hit area, with most buildings collapsing and landslides rife throughout the town, leading to water and power outages, and disruptions to communications and transportation.

I remember ten years ago, on May 12th, I was still at home, surfing the internet for fun, unaware of the devastation that claimed so many precious lives. All I know is that back then, television, newspapers, and the internet were all in black and white, and every time I saw the news about the earthquake relief efforts, I burst into tears.

One day, I was there in person. The sight of the collapse was shocking. I was even more moved by the stories of the earthquake told by the commentator. The buildings before me collapsed, there were faults, and there were deep sinkholes...

There are still many life bones resting here

The shadow of the disaster ten years ago is still deeply engraved on the wall, and the clock is forever frozen at the afternoon of May 12, ten years ago. Although the collapsed building is surrounded by weeds, the country has built it into a patriotic base.

It is recommended to ask for a tour guide. It is too tragic.

The clock is forever stuck at 14:28:04 on May 12, 2008

During the tour, some tourists were laughing and the tour guide immediately stopped their behavior.

You know, there are still some deceased people buried here.

Which will come first, the accident or tomorrow?

I was here in 2014, and this time I was revisiting the place. The student dormitories were in tatters. Buildings were crumbling everywhere! It was a truly devastating sight. You can only imagine how tragic it was back then!

On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province. Several strong aftershocks followed in the following days. Yingxiu Town was the epicenter and the hardest hit area. The devastating scenes I witnessed on television that year left a deep impression on me, so when I visited Wenchuan this time, I was eager to visit the earthquake site. The most intact site still extant in Yingxiu Town is the Xuankou Middle School ruins of the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan. This site, preserved as it was in commemoration of the Wenchuan earthquake, remains intact. It's said that the remains of 19 students and two teachers remain buried beneath the rubble of the main teaching building. Honestly, it's hard to describe the feeling I had while visiting the site; it felt indescribably depressing. Only after exiting the gates of the Xuankou Middle School ruins did I finally recover and truly appreciate the beauty of life.

Yingxiu—this name is so beautiful and so poetic. But I think many people only know it because of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake ten years ago. As the epicenter, Yingxiu has become a household name ever since. What's it like to visit this place, a decade later, that once caused such heartache for the nation? Exactly ten years have passed, and those of us who were in the third year of junior high back then have now entered the workforce.

Ten years later, after reconstruction, Yingxiu looked completely different. Some say the living are lucky, like the owner of the pickled cabbage noodles we ate at lunch. Although his arm was broken in the earthquake, at least he survived. This is probably why so many tour leaders choose to eat there! As we left Yingxiu, we saw pairs of hands holding up hearts along the roadside. That earthquake had changed so much.

It has been ten years since the 512 earthquake, and this place has been rebuilt into a tourist town, but seeing some of the remaining ruins up close is still shocking.

Yingxiu Town is located at the southern gate of Aba Prefecture, 78km away from Chengdu. It is an important transportation route for people entering and leaving Jiuzhaigou, Wolong, and Siguniang Mountain. If you are passing by to rest, you can take a look. You will still be terrified by the power of the earthquake.

By Milestone |

Sichuan's geological structure is unique, especially Yingxiu, which is sandwiched between two tectonic plates, and major crustal movements occur every few decades. Visiting the earthquake site, I listened with a heavy heart as locals recounted the events of the earthquake. Although it's been a decade, the scenes are still vivid in my mind.

By Desert Dust and Mist |

The scenes I had seen on TV before were far less shocking than what I saw in person. Many places still retain some relics of that time.

By A cigarette in hand |

I was not happy to be charged 10 yuan for parking when I arrived for a self-driving tour! I visited the earthquake ruins and mourned the victims. As for playing, there was nothing fun. The scenery was ok on the way to Wolong.

The Wenchuan Yingxiu earthquake site is actually called Tiandi Yingxiu. Admission is free, but the sightseeing bus costs 20 yuan. It's not located in Chengdu. From Chengdu, take the Duwen Expressway to Yingxiu. Ten years after the earthquake, the peaceful town is rebuilt on one side, while the vine-covered ruins still shock.

By Flower buds |

The visit was quite depressing, and seeing the ruins was incredibly somber. A tour guide who had survived the earthquake said something that particularly touched me: "To be alive is to be reborn." Yingxiu is now beautifully built, and I believe the people who survived have been reborn from the pain of the earth being torn apart.

By DaddyPuff |

Yingxiu, the epicenter of the 5.12 earthquake, suffered the most severe damage and the highest number of casualties. The quake reduced Yingxiu to ruins. Of the town's population of over 10,000, only a little over 2,300 survived, with over 1,000 seriously injured. To commemorate this tragic event, the local government established the Wenchuan Earthquake Relics Protection Area at the site of the Xuankou Middle School earthquake.

Feel the helplessness when a natural disaster strikes. You can feel it by looking at the scene. It is really helpless and hopeless.

By Barley wine and butter tea |

Ten years have passed. Post-disaster reconstruction has erected identical buildings, the tourism industry is booming, and schools that did not completely collapse have been protected and become eternal monuments. However, too much pain and facts that were not pursued in time have long been buried among the green mountains and clear waters.

You only see what they want you to see.

That's all.

But we still have to be grateful for such existence, which allows us to have something to think about in this prosperous era.

A gloomy sky overflowed with a thick, overburdened fog, weighing heavily upon us. The fluttering red flag stood out amid the ruins, a startling sight. Nearly a decade had passed since 2008, and a campus that should have been vibrant and vibrant had been reduced to rubble by a devastating disaster, forever plunging those vibrant lives a decade earlier into endless darkness and deathly silence. The scene was too cruel and depressing. My mother, unwilling to witness it any longer, urged us to leave.

On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, with Yingxiu at its epicenter. Ten years later, I was finally able to experience the horror of that time firsthand. Yingxiu Town has now been developed into an educational tourism destination. The town is well-developed, and the survivors have rebuilt their homes, forgotten their pain, and are living optimistically. I hope Yingxiu continues to improve!

By Jia |

Now the Requiem is playing in a loop above the ruins. Broken glass and fallen light bulbs can still be clearly seen in the ruins. The ruins are overgrown with weeds, and the surrounding Cangshan Mountains have regrown with vegetation, while the sunlight above is still bright and dazzling!

By biscuit |

A clock in one of the classrooms fell to the ground, freezing time and thus creating this stone clock. During an earthquake in a dormitory, a mother tried to escape, but remembering her two pregnant daughters inside, she rushed back to save them. Tragically, three, or rather, five, perished there. It's said that when the earthquake struck, the area was filled with wailing, and the people could hear the cries from within the ruins, feeling powerless to do anything. The earthquake, coupled with poor transportation, completely isolated the people of Yingxiu from the outside world, left them unsure how to spend their money. Perhaps only they experienced this profound realization: money is meaningless, nothing else matters, only family and happiness are most important.

By Leila |

Visiting a middle school after the Yingxiu earthquake, you can see that the entire school building is tilted and collapsed. If it weren't for the movie special effects, such a building would be hard to see in real life. You can also experience the earthquake in 5D for 30 yuan.

By Blare-DD |

Listening to the locals recalling the scene of the earthquake that year, I can't help but sigh at the fragility of human life. How many families have been torn apart by natural disasters. I have to admit how weak people are in the face of nature. So we should all live in the present, cherish the family who loves you, and live a good life!

The best-preserved building in Figure 1 is the one that saved the lives of more than one hundred students when the earthquake occurred. It is the connection between two teaching buildings.

The stacked building in Figure 2 is the school's lecture hall. It was a five-story building, but after the earthquake, only three floors were visible.

By minya |

I visited the Earthquake Memorial Hall, but since taking photos inside is not allowed, I can't share the photos inside with you. If you see the photos inside, I'm sure you will feel emotional or even cry. Some of the items inside are left over from the earthquake, such as the conductor's microphone, medical equipment, and relics of students from the school.

I experienced what it was like to be struck by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake in a dark room. Although I was frightened to tears, real earthquakes are dozens of times more terrifying. I used to only know the number of casualties, but after reading the detailed information about the Wenchuan earthquake, I learned that the ultimate number of people affected was over 40 million. Natural disasters are ruthless, but there is love in the world. People continued to visit along the way, and everyone felt heavy-hearted. I believe the devastation is real, and we should care more about the injured. I hope Wenchuan will be better.

By echizen |

The earthquake site is well-preserved, revealing various ruins. Buildings collapsed in various ways, including splitting in the middle, falling forward, and even collapsing on the bottom floor. So, it's hard to say how to escape from an earthquake. The first floor is definitely dangerous; quickly run to an open area. Whether to escape from the second and third floors depends on the seismic waveform and the structure of the building. Carefully studying natural disaster preparedness and escape strategies may be the key to your survival, aside from luck.

I took advantage of the tour guide along the way and heard several stories about the middle school on this site. Some teachers rescued students first when disasters occurred, and then retreated or even sacrificed themselves. This selfless act is really precious.

Seeing these ruins is still very solemn. Thinking about how many families were torn apart at that time, my eyes can't help but turn red.

All we can say is that we should cherish the living. After all, humans are so vulnerable to natural disasters. Some people are killed without any choice when they encounter accidents. People like you and me who still hold our own lives in our hands should really cherish them.

By draw |

Every time I feel very heavy-hearted, even trembling with fear of earthquakes. The tour guide said that there were more than a dozen students and teachers buried under the teaching building. At first, cries of "Uncles, aunts, grandpa and grandma, save me" were heard from under the rubble. They all showed signs of life, but due to the lack of tools and excavation equipment, everything fell silent after three days. They were all gone. My son walked around the site twice before he was willing to leave. It can be seen that this scene touched him at such a young age.

Ten years ago, the devastating earthquake cruelly took countless lives. As we entered the school, a wave of sadness washed over us, a reminder that life is hard, and we should cherish every moment. The clock at the entrance stood out, its time forever frozen at 2:28:04 PM on May 12, 2008. Our tour guide explained a lot to us, and I long to write down my feelings after hearing them, but I don't know where to begin. Forget it, I'll leave it to you to experience it for yourselves!

The 512 Victims Cemetery and Earthquake Memorial Hall are across from Xuankou Middle School. In addition to some earthquake memorial exhibits, the memorial hall also offers further information on earthquakes and disaster prevention, and even a simulated earthquake experience. (The memorial hall is free, but the simulated experience costs 20 yuan, which I personally think is quite good! It's also a good way to make money!)

Tips: If you visit the cemetery and memorial hall, there is no need to drive to the parking lot above, as there is an extra charge. It takes less than ten minutes to walk to the parking lot. It is a small hill, and it only takes about ten minutes to walk to the memorial hall.

Standing on the hill of the memorial hall, you can overlook the new Yingxiu Town, which can be seen to have been well restored.

We visited the Yingxiu earthquake site, the former Xuankou Middle School, which reportedly had over a thousand students and teachers. Buildings on campus collapsed, the clocks frozen at 2:28 PM. A red flag fluttered high on a tower at the site, symbolizing the resilience and perseverance of the people affected. We circled the site to express our deepest remembrance for the compatriots who lost their lives in the May 12 earthquake.

The epicenter of the "5.12" Wenchuan earthquake is the site of Xuankou Middle School. There is a battery bus from the parking lot of the scenic area to the site. The round-trip ticket is 20 yuan, and the scenic area is free. There are also museums such as the site of the middle school and the memorial hall for reference. They give a detailed introduction to the occurrence of the 2008 5.12 earthquake and the post-disaster reconstruction. It is shocking and worth a visit.

Next to the collapsed school building, there are already various tourist modes that require visitors to pay: taking photos, experiencing the museum, and the sound of hawking. This place that I originally thought was a place of remembrance has become a tourist attraction. With a click, at a free photo spot next to the ruins, people were pulled away by the staff, leaving behind bewildered figures, and the sound of "next" kept ringing in my ears.

This trend is inevitable, so I just smiled and let it go. What surprised me was the bus. It looked old, with plaster on the white roof and rust spreading along the cracks in the car body. But it exuded a youthful and cute vibe. The pink and white car body and the little bear on it looked lively against the gray-blue background. The bus looked like a cute little face that was still cute after the earthquake. Although it was covered in dust, perhaps it was the hope of rebirth.

By His Royal Highness Wang Jiuye |

On my way back to Chengdu from Seda, I passed through the Wenchuan earthquake zone. Yingxiu was at the epicenter, and the extent of the devastation was unimaginable. Seeing it there was truly moving. It's important to respect life and nature!

By It's okay to cough |

I originally came here with a respectful heart to pay my respects, but I was stopped as soon as I entered Yingxiu Town. I had to park my car in the parking lot, which charged 10 yuan. Then I had to walk or take a sightseeing bus to the ruins of Xuankou Middle School. In fact, you can drive in the town, but because you are a tourist, you are not allowed to drive around by yourself!

The ruins of Xuankou Middle School retain their original appearance from the earthquake, and the visit was quite shocking. For some reason, the staff had set up a free photo booth next to the collapsed building. First of all, taking a photo next to such a tragic site was hard to tell whether to laugh or cry. Secondly, frequent travelers know the purpose of these photo booths, so I won't elaborate! Outside the middle school were all sorts of small stalls selling things. As we were inside touring the ruins, all we could hear were butter tea and yak meat, which immediately ruined our mood and made us feel like we had no desire to stay. The staff also kept insisting that everything was free except for the 20 yuan sightseeing bus. So, why did they charge me 10 yuan for parking? If I asked any more questions, they would just tell me the complaint number and I could call them to file a complaint! I really don't need this little money, and I will never come here again. Everyone may think that they have experienced that catastrophe, and now after reconstruction, they also need to make money to live. I can understand that, but I don't think it should be this way. If this place is really turned into a serious memorial hall without those commercial promotions, I would rather spend 100 yuan on a ticket, go in and have a good visit, and pay tribute to the compatriots who died unfortunately. At the same time, I will also respect the survivors who lost their homes and loved ones!

In addition, according to other friends' travel notes, the tour guides here are all survivors of the school during the earthquake. Now they have grown up and come here to work as tour guides. I did see a little girl giving a tour coming out with red eyes. I think they really should go to other cities. Don't repeat the scenes every day. They will never get out of this shadow. I really feel sorry for them. Others have already entered a new life, but they have to repeat every day that my teacher and my classmates are buried here. This kind of inner torture is too terrible!

In 2007, I visited a giant panda breeding base in Yingxiu and saw those adorable, toy-like creatures. When I heard about the 2008 earthquake in Yingxiu, I immediately thought of them. I later learned there wasn't much damage, but a few small animals were crushed by collapsed walls, which was heartbreaking. In June 2008, I visited Yingxiu and Hanwang Town and saw the aftermath of the earthquake on Hanwang Dongqi School. The entire town government building had collapsed. It was so tragic!

Go and feel it, recall and imagine what it felt like back then. The memory is still fresh.

Well, my mood becomes heavy, and I don't want to think too much about some things. Love nature, be respectful, do more good deeds, and live forever.

Those passing through Yingxiu on their way to Jiuzhaigou have one hour to visit

I have always wanted to visit the earthquake site. During the May Day holiday, I finally went to visit it. I was shocked. The photos are all the same. I only talked about the traffic conditions. I hope you can use them. I feel that the transportation is not very convenient. The direct bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station to Yingxiu leaves very late. I arrived at the bus station at 7 o'clock in the morning. The earliest bus was more than 10 o'clock. I decisively refunded the ticket and bought a bus from Dujiangyan Bus Station. According to the map, it was still 30 kilometers to Yingxiu. There was no direct bus from Dujiangyan to Yingxiu. There were two routes: 1. Take the bus to Shuimo Ancient Town and then transfer to Yingxiu. The advantage is that you can see two attractions. The disadvantage is that the ancient towns in Sichuan are similar, with antique buildings and commercial streets. In addition, I don't know what time the bus from Shuimo Town to Yingxiu leaves. Because I was in a hurry, I decisively chose option 2. The bus from Dujiangyan to Wenchuan, the full price ticket is 30 yuan, get off at Yingxiu exit of Duwen Expressway, and arrive in half an hour by car. The disadvantage is that you can only take a taxi to Yingxiu Town when you get to the expressway exit. I was cheated out of 20 yuan because I was not familiar with the road conditions. It took more than ten minutes to get directly to the memorial hall. The correct transportation for backpackers is: walk 500 meters forward after arriving at the Yingxiu exit, you will reach the turbulent Minjiang River, the upstream of the Dujiangyan water conservancy project, and next to it is the tunnel to Yingxiu Town. About 1 kilometer through the tunnel, turn left and walk 600 meters to the tourist center. You can start the tour from the tourist center at the foot of the mountain to the memorial hall on the mountain. Opposite the tourist center is the new Yingxiu Town, where the ruins of Xuankou Middle School are located. It is very shocking. In a hurry, I didn’t see the Yingxiu landmark Flying Stone or the epicenter. There are private cars at the foot of the mountain that take you back to Dujiangyan for 15 yuan.

The Yingxiu Earthquake Relics, the epicenter of the May 12th Wenchuan earthquake, are located between the mouth of Niumiangou, above the Baihua Bridge in Yingxiu Town, and Lianhuaxin, extending to Caijiagang Village in Xuankou Town. The Wenchuan earthquake began to rip the earth apart here. With a terrifying roar, millions of cubic meters of rock fragments cascaded down the steep cliffs, creating a turbulent rock flow that zigzagged along the sides of several large ravines, creating a nearly 3-kilometer-long rock flow and nine rock impact surfaces. The original Niumiangou Valley was instantly raised by 30 meters.

During the Wenchuan earthquake, 80% of the Duwen Highway was destroyed, a 10-kilometer-long section was completely covered by collapsed mountains, more than 50 bridges were damaged, 7 bridges completely collapsed, and dozens of landslides occurred.

At the intersection of Yingxiu Town, Wenchuan County, stands a massive stone with the words "5.12 Epicenter Yingxiu" written on it. The words are particularly eye-catching. The stone, which rolled down from a mountain during the earthquake, now serves as a landmark signpost for Yingxiu, the epicenter.
