Laojun Mountain or Yuntai Mountain

Laojun looks very nice - is it nicer than yuntai and worth a trip for an overnight trip to watch the sunrise?

I gather I can stay near the peak overnight and do so? anywhere I can book the hotel or recommendations?

thanks

Both Laojun Mountain (Laojunshan) and Yuntai Mountain are stunning natural attractions in Henan Province, but they offer very different experiences. If your goal is to enjoy breathtaking scenery, spiritual tranquility, and a chance to witness an incredible sunrise from the mountaintop, Laojun Mountain is the better choice for an overnight trip. However, if you prefer dramatic waterfalls, deep gorges, and easily accessible trails, Yuntai Mountain might be more convenient for a day trip.

Laojun Mountain is located near Luoyang and is part of the Funiu Mountain range. It is named after Laozi (Lao Tzu), the founder of Taoism, and has strong cultural and spiritual significance. The highlight is the golden temple perched at the summit, surrounded by sea clouds and misty peaks, especially at sunrise or sunset. Watching the sunrise from Laojun’s summit is considered one of the most beautiful experiences in central China, with the temple glowing in the first light of dawn.

Yuntai Mountain, located near Jiaozuo, is more famous for its deep valleys, red stone cliffs, and waterfalls. It’s a UNESCO Global Geopark, great for nature photography and hiking, but it lacks the mystical, high-altitude sunrise experience that Laojun offers. Most visitors to Yuntai Mountain stay in nearby towns like Xiuwu or Jiaozuo rather than on the mountain itself, while Laojun Mountain allows for accommodation near or on the summit.

  • Laojun Mountain highlights: Golden Summit Temple, sunrise views above the clouds, Taoist culture, peaceful environment.
  • Yuntai Mountain highlights: Red Rock Gorge, waterfalls, scenic canyons, geological formations.
  • Best for sunrise: Laojun Mountain — the summit view is unmatched.
  • Best for hiking and waterfalls: Yuntai Mountain — ideal for a one-day scenic hike.

As for staying overnight at Laojun Mountain, yes, it is possible and highly recommended if you want to catch the sunrise. There are several guesthouses and hotels near the mountaintop and at the cable car base. The accommodation near the peak is limited but convenient for early morning climbs. Most visitors take the cable car partway up and hike the final section to reach the summit before sunset.

Recommended lodging areas include:

  • Laojun Mountain Scenic Area Hotels: Several small guesthouses and inns are located near the upper cable car station. These are ideal for early sunrise treks.
  • Laojunshan International Hotel (老君山国际酒店): A comfortable option near the scenic entrance, offering modern rooms and easy access to cable cars.
  • Yuntai Mountain Hotels (for comparison): Yuntai Shanzhuang Hotel and Hongshi Valley Resort near the park gate are popular but located lower in the valley, so not suited for sunrise viewing.

You can book hotels for Laojun Mountain through major Chinese travel platforms such as Ctrip (Trip.com), Qunar, or Fliggy. Search for accommodations under “Luanchuan County, Laojunshan Scenic Area (栾川县 老君山景区)” for the best options. If you don’t speak Chinese, Trip.com provides an English interface and international payment options.

In summary, if your main goal is a memorable mountain experience, Laojun Mountain is the better choice for its panoramic sunrise views, Taoist temples, and tranquil atmosphere. Plan to arrive the afternoon before, stay overnight near the summit or cable car area, and wake up early for the sunrise — it’s one of the most breathtaking moments you can experience in central China.
