ATV Trip in Greenville, Maine

A couple of friends and I are currently planning an ATV trip to the Moosehead Lake area.

Currently, we plan to bounce from campground to campground via ATVs but we’re definitely open to suggestions!

The plan was to start at Northern Outdoors in the forks, travel to Greenville, Kokadjo, then Rockwood all via atv. Planned on stopping for food/ interesting sights, and to sleep. Any help planning would be greatly appreciated!

That sounds like an amazing trip! The Moosehead Lake area offers some incredible ATV trails, scenic views, and fun places to visit, so you'll definitely have a great time exploring by ATV. Here are a few suggestions and ideas to help you plan your trip and make the most of your time in the region:

Your route from Northern Outdoors in The Forks to Greenville, Kokadjo, and Rockwood is a fantastic start, and there are plenty of attractions and camping spots to consider along the way. Below are some of the things you might want to keep in mind as you plan:

  • Northern Outdoors (The Forks) – Start your adventure here, as Northern Outdoors is a popular spot for ATV rentals and guided tours. The Forks area has access to numerous ATV trails and plenty of scenic views of the Kennebec River. Be sure to check out some of the local eateries and grab a bite before heading out on the trails.
  • Moosehead Lake Region – From The Forks, head towards Greenville. The trail system in the Moosehead Lake area is extensive, and you'll pass by some beautiful sights. Make sure to take a detour to get a closer view of the lake itself—especially at sunset! Also, Greenville has several places to stop for food and supplies, such as Moosehead Market or the Greenville Inn.
  • Kokadjo – This is a more remote, rustic area that's perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. The ATV trail system connects directly to Kokadjo, and it’s a great place to camp and explore. Be sure to stop by Libby Camps for a meal and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. If you want to explore further, the area around Kokadjo is known for its hiking trails and wildlife spotting.
  • Rockwood – Rockwood is a scenic town near the northeastern tip of Moosehead Lake. The ATV trails here offer a great view of Mount Kineo and the surrounding forests. Be sure to take a moment to admire the views of the lake and the majestic mountain. For food, Birches Resort offers a great spot to relax after a long day of riding, and they have a restaurant serving up hearty meals perfect for ATV adventurers.

Along the way, you'll have a few opportunities to stop for local attractions and interesting sights:

  • Mount Kineo – You can take a boat ride or use the trails to access Mount Kineo. The view from the summit is breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
  • Moose Watching – The Moosehead Lake area is known for its wildlife, especially moose. There are many spots where you can safely view moose, such as along the trails around Kokadjo or near the shores of the lake.
  • The Appalachian Trail – If you have a little extra time, you might be able to ride some sections of the ATV trails that parallel the Appalachian Trail. While the full hike is not ATV accessible, certain parts of the trail system cross paths with ATV routes.

For camping, there are several great spots to consider along your route:

  • Northern Outdoors – As you already planned, this is an ideal starting point with convenient campgrounds and direct trail access. They also offer a full range of services like cabins, RV sites, and more.
  • Greenville Campground – Located near the town center, this campground offers easy access to the ATV trails and plenty of amenities. It’s a great place to stop for a night.
  • Libby Camps (Kokadjo) – This rustic, remote campground is perfect for those looking to enjoy a more peaceful, wilderness experience. They offer a variety of cabins, and it's a good place to relax after a day of riding.
  • Rockwood Campground – Situated on the shores of Moosehead Lake, this is another great option with stunning lake views and convenient access to local attractions.

As you're traveling between these locations, be sure to check trail maps and stay updated on any trail conditions, as some areas may be affected by weather or other factors. The Moosehead Lake ATV trail system is well-maintained, but it's always good to double-check before setting off each day!

All in all, this sounds like an incredible ATV adventure with some fantastic sights and plenty of opportunities for exploration. Have a great time on your trip, and feel free to reach out if you need any more tips!
