Swimming near kokadjo

Hi!

We’ve been going to the areas near Koladjo for over 10 years now, but usually in the fall. This year we go mid August. We are hoping to go swimming this time

The camp we stay at has leeches in the pond. Looking for places to take the kids with less probability of someone needing leech removal after :)

Any suggestions? First roach an option?

If you’re heading to the Greenville/Kokadjo area in mid-August and want to avoid leeches while swimming, there are some options worth considering. Many ponds in this region do have leeches, particularly shallow, weedy areas, so it’s smart to pick larger or more frequently used swimming spots.

Here are some suggestions for safer swimming areas with lower risk of leeches:

  • Moosehead Lake public beaches: The larger public areas such as Lily Bay State Park and the Greenville town beach have sandy or gravelly entry points. These areas are monitored and generally have fewer leeches because of more circulation and frequent use.
  • Shoreline coves with sandy bottoms: When looking at smaller ponds, choose coves or areas with sandy or rocky bottoms rather than weedy, shallow edges. Leeches tend to congregate in shallow vegetation.
  • Roach Pond: Yes, Roach Pond is an option. While there may be some insects and natural wildlife, swimming near the main open areas is usually safe and leech encounters are minimal compared to smaller ponds.

Additional tips for minimizing leech encounters:

  • Have kids wear water shoes or sandals to reduce direct skin contact with pond bottoms.
  • Encourage swimming in the middle of ponds or beaches rather than shallow edges.
  • Inspect and rinse off immediately after swimming; most leeches are easy to remove if noticed quickly.
  • Avoid still, heavily vegetated ponds, especially those that are not frequented by other swimmers.

Overall, sticking to the public beaches at Moosehead Lake or open swimming areas in Roach Pond should give your kids a fun swimming experience with minimal risk of leeches.
