Best walking route from Forsyth Park to River Street

I am looking to know what the best walking route to take to leisurely walk from Forsyth Park to the River street. I am interested in seeing historic homes, interesting shops, and any other suggestions out there. The length of time and distance to walk it does not matter to me. Thank you in advance for any help.

Walking from Forsyth Park to River Street is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Savannah’s beauty. The city’s historic district is laid out on a grid of oak-shaded squares, beautiful homes, and charming streets, so you can easily design a route that highlights architecture, history, and local shops. The total walk is about 1.3–1.8 miles depending on the path you choose, and since time doesn’t matter, you can take advantage of several scenic detours.

Below is a recommended route that emphasizes the most beautiful squares, historic homes, and great local areas to explore. This keeps you in the safest, most charming part of the Historic District.

Recommended Scenic Walking Route (Forsyth Park → River Street)

  • Start at the north end of Forsyth Park near the iconic fountain. Exit the park on the Bull Street side, which is considered the most classic and historic axis in the city.
  • Walk north on Bull Street. This will take you through Savannah’s most picturesque sequence of squares, each surrounded by stunning historic homes and shaded by live oaks.
  • First square: Monterey Square — Home to the Mercer-Williams House. This is one of Savannah’s most beautiful and photographed squares.
  • Next: Madison Square — Good mix of historic architecture and small boutiques.
  • Then: Chippewa Square — Famous location from “Forrest Gump” (the bench scene). Beautiful buildings and great people-watching.
  • Johnson Square → Ellis Square — Closer to City Market. More shops, cafes, and a lively atmosphere.
  • Continue toward Bay Street. You’ll notice the terrain slopes downward as you approach the river.
  • Cross Bay Street and descend one of the historic pathways (such as the stone steps at Factors Walk or the ramp at Bull Street) to reach River Street.

Highlights You’ll See Along This Route

  • Gorgeous townhomes and historic mansions surrounding the squares.
  • Local shops and galleries along Bull Street and in City Market.
  • li>Cafés and bakeries where you can stop for coffee or treats, especially near Chippewa Square and on Broughton Street.
  • Factors Walk — A unique multi-level historic area with cobblestones and old cotton warehouses.

Alternative Longer or More Scenic Detours

  • Whitaker Street Route: Instead of walking straight up Bull Street, shift one block west to Whitaker around Monterey Square. Whitaker has quieter residential charm and beautiful homes with fewer crowds. You can cross back to Bull Street at any square.
  • Abercorn Street / Historic Home Route: Go east from Forsyth Park toward Gaston Street, then walk up Abercorn. This route gives you some of the most elegant historic homes in Savannah and passes by lovely squares like Calhoun and Oglethorpe.
  • Shopper’s Route (Broughton Street): For more boutiques, cafés, and browsing, shift from Bull Street onto Broughton Street near Ellis Square, then rejoin Bull toward the river.

General Tips

The route is very safe, heavily walked by visitors, and beautifully lit in the evening. Savannah is meant to be explored slowly—stop in the squares, take photos, browse shops, and enjoy plenty of shaded resting spots. Once you reach River Street, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, river views, and unique stores to enjoy.

This walk is truly one of the best ways to experience Savannah at its finest. Enjoy your visit!
