Maui Cruise Port

Ok, I have a question or two. First-timer here to Hawaii and I am wondering how easy it is to get a taxi or Uber in Maui? I am looking for a nice place to have dinner off the ship. From what I’ve read we will have to be away from port for most restaurants? Looking for suggestions on places to eat as well. Thanks!

Welcome to your first trip to Maui! It’s a beautiful island, and I’m sure you’re going to have a fantastic time. Here’s a detailed breakdown to help answer your questions about transportation, dining, and making the most of your time off the ship.

1. Getting a Taxi or Uber in Maui: Maui does have taxi and Uber services, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Taxis: Taxis are generally available at the cruise port, but it’s good to know that they can sometimes be in high demand, especially during peak times when multiple ships are docked. It’s best to check ahead of time or book a taxi in advance if possible.
  • Uber/Lyft: Uber and Lyft are available on Maui, but rides might take a little longer to arrive compared to larger cities. The pickup location for ride-sharing services is usually a short walk from the port. It’s generally easy to get a ride, but during busy hours, you may experience longer wait times. It's also a good idea to check the app for availability before you disembark, as some drivers may be located farther away.
  • Shuttles: If you're part of a larger group or looking for a more organized transport option, some cruise lines offer shuttle services to popular destinations, though these may require advance booking.

2. Dining Off the Ship: There are many great restaurants on Maui that are just a short distance from the cruise port. While you’ll need to travel a little away from the port to find the best spots, Maui has an excellent dining scene, ranging from casual beachside eateries to fine dining experiences. Here are some recommendations based on your location at the port (which is likely in Lahaina):

  • Lahaina Grill: This is one of the most popular fine-dining spots in Lahaina. Known for its farm-to-table approach and creative dishes, it’s a great place to enjoy a memorable dinner. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk from the port, so it’s very accessible.
  • Fleetwood's on Front St: Owned by Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, this restaurant offers delicious seafood and has an amazing rooftop bar with beautiful views of the ocean. It’s also located on Front Street, just a short walk from the port.
  • Down the Hatch: A casual, fun spot for lunch or dinner, offering a wide range of options from poke bowls to burgers and tacos. It has a laid-back vibe with a great outdoor patio. It’s located in the heart of Lahaina, about a 10-minute walk from the port.
  • Star Noodle: If you’re craving something Asian-inspired, Star Noodle in Lahaina is a fantastic option. Known for its inventive noodle dishes, it’s a bit further from the port (about a 10-minute drive), but totally worth it.
  • Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop: If you’re craving something a little different, Leoda’s in Olowalu (just south of Lahaina) is a great spot for a casual meal. It’s known for its savory pies and great sandwiches. It’s a little farther out but still a quick 15-20 minute drive.

3. Things to Keep in Mind: Maui is a popular destination for tourists, so some of the more popular restaurants can get crowded, especially during dinner hours. It's always a good idea to make a reservation in advance if possible, or at least call ahead to check availability. Also, consider the traffic, as getting around Lahaina can take longer than you expect, especially during peak tourist seasons.

In terms of getting the best experience, try to leave a little bit of extra time to explore Lahaina’s charming Front Street area after dinner. You’ll find plenty of shops, bars, and some great scenic views. Enjoy your dinner and your time in Maui!
