Hotels that DO NOT allow pets?

We'd like to take the kids to DC, but I can't seem to locate a hotel that isn't pet friendly. Three of the four of us have allergies, and none of us want our trip ruined by barking. The last time we stayed in a hotel, it was pet friendly, and between the allergies and the noise, it was a very expensive nightmare.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Finding a hotel in Washington, DC that truly does not allow pets can be surprisingly challenging. Many major hotel chains have shifted toward pet-friendly policies, but there are still several reliable options for travelers with allergies or sensitivity to noise. The key is choosing properties with strict “no pets except service animals” rules and confirming this directly with the hotel before booking.

Below are several hotels in DC that historically do not allow pets (other than ADA-required service animals), followed by some hotel strategies that can help allergy-sensitive families avoid problems.

Hotels in Washington, DC with No-Pet Policies

  • Hampton Inn & Suites (various DC locations) – Hilton’s Hampton brand typically enforces a no-pet policy except for service animals. These properties are consistent, clean, and known for being family friendly.
  • Holiday Inn Express (multiple DC locations) – Most Holiday Inn Express hotels do not accept pets. They are generally good for allergy-sensitive guests since they maintain simpler room furnishings and have stricter cleaning standards.
  • Courtyard by Marriott (selected DC properties) – While some Courtyards have become pet friendly, several locations in DC remain no-pet. Courtyard hotels are often quieter and business-oriented.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites – Another Marriott brand with many no-pet hotels. These are usually more budget-friendly and reliable for families.
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton (some locations) – Not all are pet friendly, and several DC properties still maintain no-pet rules. Call ahead to verify specific locations.

These properties generally maintain good soundproofing and have fewer noise complaints than trendier boutique hotels. However, always confirm with the specific address you plan to book, since pet policies can vary even within the same brand.

Tips to Reduce Allergy or Noise Issues When Booking a Hotel

  • Ask for a hypoallergenic or non-pet room floor – Some hotels designate entire floors as “no pet” areas even if the hotel allows pets overall.
  • Request a room away from elevators and on a higher floor – This reduces hallway noise and avoids heavy traffic areas where dogs are more likely to pass.
  • Choose business-oriented hotels – Hotels that cater to conferences and work travel tend to have stricter noise rules and fewer pets.
  • Avoid boutique or design hotels – These are more likely to be pet friendly and also tend to have thinner walls.
  • Always call the front desk – Ask: “Do you allow pets other than service animals? Are any pet rooms adjacent to hypoallergenic rooms?”

If you want the most allergy-safe experience, the safest bet is a traditional chain hotel with a well-established no-pet policy. Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and many Fairfield Inn locations in DC are among the most consistent options.

Finally, booking directly by phone and documenting the no-pet confirmation on your reservation can give you peace of mind. Most hotels will gladly assign you to rooms that have never housed pets when possible.
