Uber and other options for evening transport

We are definitely not late night people, but we have a tendency to eat, and wander, and sit and chat, and wander. We are staying just outside the HD on E Duffy near the end of Forsyth. I image we will need to uber back to our airbb after dark, plus we will be tired (read: old). If we have our small pup with us - is there any issue with getting him in an uber? Or what about a kiddo? She's 5 and not a baby, but she can use a seat belt. I know around where I live, I have to have a car seat, and no one will allow dogs. If Uber is similar there - what other options do we have instead of driving? Which we try to avoid, since we are old AND blind. Thank you!

Savannah’s Historic District is very walkable, but since you’re staying just outside it on E Duffy near Forsyth Park, you will likely need transportation back to your Airbnb after dinner or evening strolls, especially if it’s dark or you’re tired. Here’s a detailed breakdown of your options and considerations for traveling with a small dog and a 5-year-old child.

Uber/Lyft and Pets/Kids

  • Small Dogs: Uber generally allows small pets if you bring a carrier, but policies vary by driver. Most drivers accept small dogs in carriers; larger dogs may require a Pet Uber option or special request. Savannah has Uber Pet in some areas, which guarantees a driver willing to take pets.
  • Child Seating: Georgia law requires children under 8 or 4’9” to use a booster or car seat. Uber in Savannah does not provide car seats automatically, so you will need to bring your own if your 5-year-old requires one. Uber Car Seat (UCS) service is limited, so it’s safest to carry your own booster or seat harness.
  • General Accessibility: Standard Uber or Lyft cars are fine for two adults, a child with a booster, and a small dog in a carrier. Requesting a larger SUV can make the ride more comfortable.

Alternative Evening Transport Options

  • Taxis: Local taxi services operate throughout the Historic District and nearby neighborhoods. Many accept small dogs and children, but you may need to call in advance and explain your situation.
  • Hotel or Airbnb Shuttles: Some hotels offer evening shuttles or can recommend local car services. Even if you’re Airbnb-based, nearby hotels sometimes allow pre-arranged pickup for a fee.
  • Biking/Electric Scooters: Savannah has e-scooters and electric bikes, but these are less practical with a small child and dog, especially at night.
  • Walking: If you don’t mind a short stroll, the area around Forsyth Park and the Historic District is generally safe and well-lit, but after dark, it’s advisable to stick to main streets.
  • Private Car Services: Companies like Savannah Limousine, Coastal Car Service, or local sedan services can pick you up at a scheduled time, often more reliably for pets and children.

Tips for Evening Transport with Family and Pup

  • Always check the Uber/Lyft app for the Pet option if bringing a dog; carry a small carrier to improve acceptance.
  • Bring your own booster seat for the 5-year-old to comply with safety regulations.
  • Schedule rides in advance during busy evenings to avoid long wait times, especially with dinner and strolling plans.
  • Consider booking a private car service for convenience and reliability if you’re worried about Uber availability.

In summary, Uber and Lyft can work with a small dog in a carrier and a 5-year-old in a booster, but you need to plan ahead for car seats and pet policies. Alternative options like local taxis or private car services may be more predictable and comfortable for your group, especially for evening trips back to your Airbnb.
