Half Moon Bay or Carmel?

Flying into SFO at 2.30pm Monday, mid September. Should we head off in rental car to Half Moon Bay or Carmel so that we get an extra night in Santa Barbara further on in the trip?

This.

Both Half Moon Bay and Carmel are charming coastal stops along the California coast, but they offer slightly different experiences and considerations if you’re flying into SFO at 2:30 PM and want to maximize your time for a longer road trip down to Santa Barbara.

Half Moon Bay:

  • Pros:
    • Very close to SFO – roughly a 30–40 minute drive, making it easy to reach even with afternoon arrival and possible traffic.
    • Beautiful beaches and a small-town coastal vibe – perfect for a short evening stroll or dinner by the ocean.
    • Minimal driving stress after a flight; you’ll be able to settle in quickly.
  • Cons:
    • Smaller town – fewer lodging and dining options compared to Carmel.
    • Less of a “destination” feel if you’re looking for more to explore in the evening.

Carmel:

  • Pros:
    • Picturesque town with charming streets, boutique shops, art galleries, and a romantic coastal feel.
    • Proximity to scenic 17-Mile Drive and Big Sur (if your trip continues north later, though southbound is your main focus).
    • More options for a nice dinner or evening walk along the town’s quaint streets.
  • Cons:
    • Farther from SFO – about 2 hours driving, meaning you’ll arrive later in the evening, which may be tiring after a flight.
    • Limited daylight for sightseeing if arriving mid-afternoon.

Recommendation:

Given your arrival at 2:30 PM and desire to optimize the trip further down to Santa Barbara, staying in Half Moon Bay is likely the more practical choice. It keeps driving short after your flight, allows a relaxed evening to adjust, and still offers a pleasant coastal experience. Carmel is ideal if you don’t mind a longer drive immediately after landing and want a more scenic town experience that evening, but it may cut into your rest time before continuing your road trip.

In summary:

  • Half Moon Bay – easier, closer, low-stress first stop; quick evening by the coast.
  • Carmel – prettier and more “destination” feel but requires longer driving and evening arrival, which could be tiring.

If maximizing the Santa Barbara stay is your main priority and you want minimal stress after your flight, Half Moon Bay wins. If experiencing a charming town and coastal scenery immediately is more important, Carmel is the option.
