Plymouth & Brockton bus to Logan Airport
We are travelling from Cape Cod to Boston Logan in August next year and have been recommended to catch the direct bus service from Hyannis. You can only book tickets but not make a seat reservation - we are a family of four (including children) - and I am worried that the bus will be busy and we won't get seats.
Just how busy is this bus in August please?
Good questions — and it’s smart to think ahead about how crowded Plymouth & Brockton (P&B) buses can be, especially in August when demand is high on Cape Cod → Boston/Logan routes. Here’s what I found — and what to expect — based on their policies, schedule, and traveller reports.
What we know about P&B’s seating & ticketing
- P&B does not accept seat reservations — tickets are simply boarding passes.
- Even if you buy tickets in advance, that still does not guarantee seats. Seating is strictly first-come, first-board.
- P&B recommends arriving 15–30 minutes before departure to maximize your chance of getting seats.
- The “direct” service you refer to — from Hyannis Transportation Center (on Cape Cod) to Boston Logan International Airport (Logan) — is well-established and runs daily, including weekday and summer season.
What travellers report — especially in high season (August)
- Some travellers on forum threads (on TripAdvisor) who have used P&B in August say they have “never heard of people not getting a seat.” For example, one wrote:
“August is peak summer but if you follow my recommendations you should be fine.”
- Advice from frequent users often includes picking a “mid-week, mid-day bus or a Sunday-AM bus” and — importantly — boarding at Hyannis (the first stop) rather than a later stop. That’s because buses tend to fill up later along the route.
- Based on user-shared experiences, buses leaving Hyannis tend to have plenty of empty seats even during summer. For example (on Reddit), one user wrote:
“You’ll have plenty of seats getting on in Hyannis.”
- Still — because there is no seat-reservation system, there’s always a non-zero risk of “standing-room only” if the bus is full. Some negative reviews of P&B reflect frustrations, though often about lateness or customer service rather than overcrowding.
What this means for a family of four travelling in August (with children)
Overall: you have a pretty good chance of getting seats — especially if you board at Hyannis, arrive early (ideally 15–30 minutes before departure), and consider travelling mid-day rather than during rush/peak morning or evening. But because P&B doesn’t reserve seats, you cannot *guarantee* that all four of you will sit together or even get seats — especially if the bus is full or if you board at a later stop.
Tips to maximize your chances and reduce stress:
- Catch the bus at Hyannis Transportation Center (first stop) rather than a subsequent pick-up point — that’s when buses are emptiest.
- Arrive at least 15–30 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure (possibly earlier on busy days).
- Aim for a mid-day departure if possible (rather than early morning or late afternoon), which tends to be less crowded.
- Have a backup plan — for example, if P&B is full, check other bus operators (if available) or rideshare/taxi options — especially with children and luggage.
Bottom line: in August, demand is high, but most travellers from Hyannis report that P&B buses are not usually so crowded that passengers are left without seats. As a family of four, you’re not guaranteed to sit together, but with some planning (early arrival, first-stop boarding, avoid peak-hour buses) your chances are good that you’ll get seats — and likely all four will board comfortably.
